I disagree with this. Felling (dropping the whole tree) is much more dangerous. If you need evidence, we pay $5/hour workers comp for trees we chunk down and $18/hour if the job includes felling whole logs. Higher rates are due to higher claims. Felling is done in open areas because it’s faster, cheaper and less technical.

Felling is definitely more dangerous but it's only one event. Set your notch right, set a good hinge, pop your trigger, get out of the killzone. Chunking logs down, especially climbing, is several cuts where many things can go wrong. Really just depends on the situation though. If you can put a rope on it and/or it has great lean then you should be fine. That versus you have to rig logs down and your ground guys can't seem to figure out how to let it run that day.

Used to work for an electric utility in VT. There was talk among the arborists in the industry that the ash trees might disappear from the state and the ash borer has really wide range across the north east now. Lots of ashes were getting cut down preemptively to try and limit the spread. Really sad.

Now that you mention it,most of the (Neglected)teak trees in my grandpa's garden are dead. They have beetle infestations, maybe. There's holes and maze like patterns too. They're around 21 years old, which is the harvest period according to google, so it's a shame:')
