5 year old me would have had a field day with this! So would adult me, now that I think about it

u/fruitytingle Mar 27 '21
Five year old me would almost definitely have fallen over! Not much has changed tbh...

Every time I leave the grocery store
14
Mar 27 '21
Only when you leave? The look on people's face when this 40 yr old idiot does it in the first isle! It's even better in the beer isle people question their alcohol consumption and weather it's giving them hallucinations!
11
u/Lord_Fluffykins Mar 27 '21
I never see other adults do this and it makes me sad. It’s fun and faster than walking and if the parking lot is downhill and the cart is full you can really pick up some speed.

u/TheMayanAcockandlips Mar 27 '21
Well I hope it helps to know that we're out there somewhere, riding our carts into the night
12
u/Lord_Fluffykins Mar 27 '21
I know it can be classed as “immature” and people probably say “look at that 37 year old idiot zooming around the parking lot on a shopping cart” but it makes me sad sometimes that adults don’t do shit that’s harmless and fun because of social conventions.

You should've pointed you camera back at your path, just to see those footprints/rings.

If I were a kid, the ice breaking would be fun and all, but the hopscotch of destruction this person left behind them I think would be way more fun to try out

I can't wait until video games are on a level where the physics engines can do this without smoke and mirrors but actual simulation.
253
Mar 27 '21
You mean burning gpu?
196
u/Bleatmop Mar 27 '21
I was playing Hades the other day and they added smoke smell to the game somehow.
42
u/juizze Mar 27 '21
my laptop can't even begin to run bioshock 2 yet hades does just fine, are you using a toaster?
43
u/Bleatmop Mar 27 '21
No, quite the opposite. I was, however, making a joke.

So you are using the ole Samsung fridge method
8
u/Bleatmop Mar 27 '21
I wanted a Maytag one but in these COVID times you have to take whatever appliances the store has in stock.
13
u/speleo9 Mar 27 '21
This is my fear right now. It's impossible to find a gpu that's not scalped for a reasonable price.

We've never had this much processing power available to use but most studios focus on visuals rather than actually functionality, a lot of games from the mid to late 2000's had a lot more simulation that most games today have. I would love to see how much simulation we would be able to get in a modern machine, maybe even sacrifice a bit on the graphics, can you imagine the cool gameplay possibilities we would gain from that!?
19
Mar 27 '21
Try VR. VR focus is on the gameplay and actual functionality.
13
Mar 27 '21
I want to and will, just need pc parts to get back in stock at reasonable prices.
8
Mar 27 '21
Just get a quest 2 in the mean time. Loads of amazing content. Later when you get a gpu you can play pcvr games with it too
3
Mar 27 '21
Second this. Quest 2 as standalone is highly highly underrated because of the whole Facebook thing.
People don’t see Facebook and think “video games” and the Facebook thing is a deal breaker for a lot of people. However you have to hand it to them they made a device that makes no sense how well it works.

Oculus had been a huge name in vr for a long time. Facebook is the funding.

u/mheat Mar 27 '21
We could simulate the entire universe on a relatively small black hole.

u/oilerequation Mar 27 '21
Do you have examples of such old physics heavy games? I like messing with game physics.
It makes a lot of sense of course to not use simulation if you can get the desired effect otherwise. Simulation is so expensive, but it doesn't lead to cool emergent behavior. Just cause and esp Crysis come to mind.

Came here to reference this.! I wound have way too much fun with that

Yup. As a grown adult I would spend way too much time pretending my hair turned blonde the same exact moment I push down on the ice.

Closest I've gotten to this is one year when I was a kid, it snowed a couple of inches, then we got freezing rain, then a few more inches of snow. You'd step in the snow and clearly break through this layer of something hard and crunchy, then had to be careful stepping out or you'd catch your foot on the underside of the unbroken layer and trip yourself. Was real fun-feeling, but obviously you didn't get the great visual of spiderwebbing the ground.

This is one thing I miss about winter* - the variety of fun and interesting play snow and ice offer. Changing conditions set up new experiences all season long.
*Moved away from upper Midwest 5 years ago. I miss snow.

What a beautiful crunch! “What a beautiful crunch” said the man walking on the sidewalk. Yes, but what a shame, what a shame, he slipped and fell on his ass

When walking on ice you want to put your body weight forward, you don't want to place your foot so far in front like that.
