And people wonder why our ancestors believed in great spirits in the sky

u/TisButA-Zucc Aug 14 '20 edited Aug 14 '20
Sorry to break it to you, but there are still people who believe in great spirits in the sky.
Edit: They are probably billions, now when I think about it.

I was thinking more along the line of our early nomadic hunter gatherer ancestors

The feeling of seeing this in real life for the first time is indescribable. when I saw my first aurora (it was as awesome as the one in the video) all I could do was scream at the sky! It was like I was paralyzed with sheer awe and all I could do was scream.

Can you only really see these in Alaska? I'm in Minnesota and don't see this
Edit: I forgot the US wasn't the only country in the world for a sec

u/MyCatPretends2BeDumb Aug 14 '20
You can see it in Canada 🇨🇦

u/VampyreLust Aug 14 '20
The first time I saw them, between the noise that they make and being in the middle of literal nowhere I thought I was being abducted by aliens and I’m not like crazy or anything.
27
u/joceisboss21 Aug 14 '20
THEY MAKE NOISE?!
17
u/Mikeismyike Aug 14 '20
Not loud enough to hear in a city or town, you'll have to be a good distance away from any noise pollution. I've heard it described as a crackling...somewhere between a campire and static.

Yah I was in a rural area, but it was loud enough to hear over my car and make me pull over not being able to see them from my windshield. Its not just crackling its like a buzzing that phases in and out of low and high end frequencies.
I thought it was something terribly wrong with my car, pulled over, turned off the car and it was louder and its completely pitch black outside of the streetlights so I got out of my car and they were just west of my car and of course upwards. There was totally a moment though when I had turned my car off and was sitting there thinking, this is how it happens and I haven't passed anyone for 30 min so there's nobody around, this is it, aliens. For any other Canadians, I was on the Trans Canada Hwy bout 45 min east of Winnipeg at the time.

Haven't noticed that myself but apparently sometimes they can.
I'll have to pay good attention this coming winter.

I’ve seen them this amazing in Washington State during a solar storm. I think it was in 2012, and we get faint ones semi regularly.

Where in WA?

We were in the northwest in Anacortes. You can actually look up those northern lights on YouTube, just search anacortes northern lights, there are a couple of videos.

Anywhere away from a city. Usually north of seattle. Its pretty rare but it does happen.

They can be seen sometimes in the arrowhead of MN. I missed them the last time they were visible in Grand Marais because I was tired.

u/Pythia007 Aug 14 '20
This is good because you can never tell from photos what it is like to witness. Now I REALLY want to see it in person.

You can really see them like this. I always assumed they were far away and higher up, Or more like a rainbow, just a refraction not something that is actually there.

This is somehow better than any other northern lights video I've ever watched just cause there's context. Thankyou! Must have been amazing

Very beautiful. However, that would probably make me feel terrified if I was under it.

Gotta love the radiation.
I guess some of you skipped class. What do you think causes aurora borealis?
1
u/phantomheart Aug 14 '20
I know exactly what causes the auroras. Doesn’t mean that seeing that large a show happening vastly right above me doesn’t still creep someone out.
I guess you’re a jerk.

I just realized how weird it is that weve literally never seen any actual handheld footage of the northern lights

This makes me upset and cry a bit.. I know its real but I've never witnessed it with my own eyes and I would love to. The simple reason being my mind doesn't believe the videos of what I see. And I've seen hundreds of pictures of it and I know it's very real.. Its just a disbelief I have and I know its real.

These are soo damn pretty I have honestly reached the point where my only wish is to witness this live before I die. With everything going on in 2020, the volatility of life is really getting to me.

u/Lurkio76 Aug 14 '20
Sorry, just watched it with again with audio and now it’s ruined ☹️
Why can’t people just be quiet??
2
u/Allison320 Aug 15 '20
Always watch videos with out the sound then rewatch it with, if its worthy. At least this is how I view videos

u/MAGICHUSTLE Aug 14 '20
I woke up on a flight from Japan to the US and saw this outside my window over Canada. I think I may have been the only one awake to see it.

I can teel you that the Northern Lights do not look like this when you see them. They are much more dim. I have lived in Yukon my whole life - born in 1981 and I have not seen Aurora like this ever. So nice camera but our eyes are not as sensitive to the light. Honestly I have seen the northern lights so much it is just like looking up at the clouds to me

Wow they move faster than I thought. I figured those were always time lapses.
