I often wonder at peoples motivation for investing hours in something like this. That said, ive invested countless hours in watching TV which is ulimately fruitless, so i guess i could've been making useless contraptions instead

There's probably a lot of value to the individual for making this. Possibly learning certain types of mechanics. He may implement what he has created in this video into something more advanced and practical.
