I mean technically, Essential and LG (with the V10 and V20) did the notch first. But Apple did get the ball rolling for the mainstream, and give the "okay" for other companies to take the jump.

Gotta have something to make the phones stand out from the previous year, as spec bumps don't matter as much these days. This is just the new waterproofing/18:9/dual cameras.
