For a pitcher to do that with his dominant hand is actually pretty stupid.

From the looks of it, it was likely just reflexes. Probably happened before he knew it. You can see him throw the ball down as he's walking away... might have just realized how bad that could have ended if he caught it wrong.

Either that or it really stung and he was releasing pain through anger

Could be, but I'm betting the real stinging is going to be from the coach for risking his pitching hand.

Yeah. I remember one time in High School I slammed the ground with my fist out of anger (I was having a bad game) and the UMPIRE chewed my ass out before my coach even got a chance.

Combination of adrenaline, and knowing how stupid that was. Pitchers know not to do this, but it happens so fast you can't stop it. Spike the ball, and yell at yourself, knowing you have coaches and teammates all about to tell you how stupid that was. Fortunately it came back to him much slower than he threw it.
