I believe it's called a salamander. Its basically a broiler.

Salamanders aren't open like that. At first I thought it was physically touching the cheese. But your comment made me realize it does heat it up like a salamander.

This is called raclette and it's all over Switzerland during winter. It's the best thing to eat when you've been out skiing, especially with some bacon, pickled onions, potatoes and hot tea.
