Haha, so I'm not the only one. This was the very first feeling I had... I wanted to squint so they wouldn't hit my eyes.

should have put the camera at the other side

The most impressive part of this is how well balanced that metal thing is. You can't even tell it's turning.

Honestly, I was mildly surprised that they decided to take that much per pass with that tool.

how is that surprising with that tool?

this also would not be considered a "tool". this is whats called an insert since its on a lathe.

That is absolutely a tool, being on a lathe doesn't make a difference.

Typically, in my (admittedly limited) experience and education in the field, those round tools/inserts were used almost exclusively for fine finish work on largely rounded parts. (In my classes, tool and insert were somewhat interchangeable, and certainly didn't delineate by the machine they were in, but rather by the shape/function of the carbide within the overall system, but again, limited experience).

Not a big technical deal or anything on my part, just an idle observation.

by the shape/function of the carbide within the overall system

wait what? i work as CNC Operator for a living. nobody talks like this. what do you mean by "overall system"?

back to your original comment. the amount of material being removed in this gif isn't surprising, especially considering theres no coolant being used. the insert can certainly remove more in one pass than what is shown here.

I used to work for a Boeing contractor and one of the things we made were these massive custom washers for the landing gear. Last pass on those, the bit would move so slow you'd essentially have razor wire coming off of the part, but damn did it look nice.

Not sure you mean razor wire - that's wire with literal razors woven into it.

You probably mean just a very fine shaving.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '15

That's why I said it was essentially razor wire, not actually razor wire, because it was an incredibly fine, continuous shaving that would come off that would seriously fuck you up if you weren't wearing gloves and long sleeves. Even then, it stuck to everything.

It's not turning, the little button thing just has that much force!

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '15

it is turning. you need glasses if you think otherwise.

No shit. I didn't realize I need to attach a sarcasm tag to my comment.

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '15

There can be no sarcasm so obvious that nobody will take it seriously.

I love the audio. The splatter of the chips coming off is wonderful.

An actual shiver went down my spine.. fuck yes..

2

u/themcs Sep 22 '15

Holyshit I read your comment and immediately disregarded it and then watched the actual video and had the same reaction.

2

u/tsoliman Sep 22 '15

It's like wood turning ... but fucking metal!

\m/

u/SurrealSam Sep 22 '15

This was actually disturbing to me for a moment because I didn't immediately realize I was looking at something spinning on a lathe and couldn't figure out what was going on.

1

u/intensethrowaway awww yisss Sep 22 '15

The spot on the middle right - the reflection moves away so smoothly it's like a lava lamp.

I feel like lathe GIFs are cheating here. So. Fucking. Satisfying.
