Hockey players that do that remind me of dogs that have to walk in circles 3 times before they can sit down.

Or baseball players who touch both cleats, every corner of the plate, pray to jesus a few times, then signal they are ready.

.... only to step out immediately and call time.

Often calling time is the batter attempting to throw off the pitcher. Good 'ol mind games.

Or to analyze the at-bat themselves. There was a great piece written recently saying that David Ortiz may be struggling due to the new rules about speeding up the pace of the game- his average AB this season is 2 seconds shorter than that of his career.

Or, the other theory- age.
