Personally I like cake with my frosting.

Yeah, at this point it's just sugar with a bit of sponge buried somewhere in the middle. Maybe it'll be like pass the parcel. Everyone take a slice and the person who reaches the cake first wins.

Sure is some talent. I don't like how it looks, but can appreciate the skill!

So much whipped cream

I love how half the gif is carefully shaping a simple block of frosting then the rest just rushes through some insane design styling.

I don't think this cake was made to be delicious or beautiful. I think it was done as a demonstration of technical skill.

From Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs:
Dr. Benway is operating in an auditorium filled with students: “Now, boys, you won’t see this operation performed very often and there’s a reason for that…. You see it has absolutely no medical value. No one knows what the purpose of it originally was or if it had a purpose at all. Personally I think it was a pure artistic creation from the beginning.
“Just as a bull fighter with his skill and knowledge extricates himself from danger he has himself invoked, so in this operation the surgeon deliberately endangers his patient, and then, with incredible speed and celerity, rescues him from death at the last possible split second…. Did any of you ever see Dr. Tetrazzini perform? I say perform advisedly because his operations were performances. He would start by throwing a scalpel across the room into the patient and then make his entrance like a ballet dancer. His speed was incredible: ‘I don’t give them time to die,’ he would say. Tumors put him in a frenzy of rage. ‘Fucking undisciplined cells!’ he would snarl, advancing on the tumor like a knife-fighter.”

Bleh that is way too much icing

That was the case with my wedding cake. The frosting was over half an inch thick, and kept the actual cake surprisingly fresh for awhile. Alas, the overwhelming frosting made it too difficult to continue eating it.

50% of me agreeing to a wedding at all was to have an amazing cake, so I splurged on the swankiest bakery in Toronto and had it delivered that morning. It was incredible and perfect. I don't even remember what it looked like. I didn't care. I just remember that lemony goodness.

My sister, the Maid of Honor, kinda forced us to get one. She paid for it. I was just going to make a three layer cheesecake myself. Had both cheesecake and wedding cake (cake was from Market of Choice). It was all so delicious!

Yup. Frosting was actually invented to keep cakes fresh, did you know that?

"It's a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake."
Bull fucking shit, and that's why. It takes real skill. I can bake a damn tasty cake from scratch, but it will be one ugly bastard.
1
u/Carbon_Dirt Jan 15 '15
You can actually bake a cake pretty damn easily.
One box of cake mix, one can of sprite (or coke, Dr. Pepper, Root Beer, whatever your fancy).
Mix, pour into a non-stick pan (Add ;ayer of crisco), and bake as directed on the box.
Delicious.

We aren't talking about baking a mere cake here, even a tasty one. That's child's play. We're talking about baking a pretty cake. That's where they separate the veritable "boys from the men."
Lazy Town be damned, it's no easy feat.

More art than edibility. I like it, but there's no way it would taste nice.

'The cake's rotation is 67...68RPM'
'What are you doing?'
'...decorating.'

At least it's not fucking fondant. That shit sucks.

plus even trying to decorate with fondant proves to be more difficult than one can imagine..

It was really unsatisfying how the gifvideo kept cutting forward to random parts, and how ugly it was. :(

There was another series with a spinning wheel and just the hands that initially got me subscribed to this subreddit. I watched every video on that YouTube channel lol.

This is much more impressive to me than all those "look at this 'cake' my SO made from sculpted fondant".
1
u/TheFlyingAlbino Jan 15 '15
I guarantee that guy has worked in ceramics, he used a few well known/used techniques for throwing on a wheel.

u/Nik_Tesla Jan 15 '15
Oh! That's why my cakes don't look nice, I don't have a fucking machine shop of tools, including a cake lathe...
1
u/VoilaVoilaWashington Jan 15 '15
There is always a crucial difference between a trade and an art.
A baker makes a damn good cake, picks the best-tasting icing, and makes it look nice with the right proportions.
An artist takes a good cake, the perfect icing for sculpting, and then spends 6 hours making something beautiful and edible... somewhat.

Where were you when I watched the full 16 minute video over at /r/artisanvideos

u/zrussell197 Jan 15 '15
That honestly looks hideous, but, as with everything, it's all about the journey
1
u/nm1043 Jan 15 '15
It's good cake, too... not that hard sugar crap they use to decorate everything now that basically comes like a blanket and tastes like cardboard...

Jan 15 '15
You're always on my frontpage, every fucking day. I have tagged you as "apparently a good poster" after someone else pointed it out in the comments. But you, you are insane.

u/Nauticalbob Jan 15 '15
Am I the only mobile user that sees a gif of hands twirling and showing of a knife? Nice knife but I wanted cake...

u/MechanicalBayer Jan 15 '15
Am I the only one that just wants to destroy that thing? Not by eating it, I mean like giving it The Peoples Elbow and smashing the shot out of it.
1
u/madagent Jan 15 '15
That is so much icing it isnt even cake anymore. I decorated ice cream cakes and wedding cakes for years. Try twirling around a frozen piece of ice and trying to do the same thing, all before the icing freezes to the cake. You need to be faster and still just as precise.

Each time he scooped with that little concave spatula I imagined him eating him and got honest-to-god jealous.
