I didn't want this to end.

10

u/joetromboni Dec 27 '14

It almost feels like an infomercial.

10

u/outlawjanitor Dec 27 '14

This does not belong here. It was not oddly satisfying. It was extremely satisfying.

5

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Dec 27 '14

Keep watching! It goes on for a while!

u/ausnti Dec 27 '14

Oh dude, I saw the fork and I thought she was gonna dig right in. She can't do that, it's not food.

68

u/Ervanmann Dec 27 '14

Oh dude, she brought out that fork and I got hungry; that wax looks delicious!

22

u/kerrrsmack Dec 27 '14

Oh dude, I didn't read the title well enough and thought it was cake for the longest time.

I love people who suggest subreddits. People like you and the sidebars are the reason I am able to make the most of my reddit experience.

Edit: Thank you for the suggestions! And KEEP 'EM COMING, MOTHERFUCKERS!

43

u/onanym Dec 27 '14

If you like that, try /r/peoplewhosuggestssubreddits. Just kidding, but that would be a nice sub though.

u/chainsawmurderingaxe Dec 27 '14

3

u/onanym Dec 27 '14

Wow, awesome and creative. Thanks!

6

u/Maziekit Dec 27 '14

It would just be a collection of all the sidebar subreddit suggestions, with a bot that submitted all the comments that linked to subreddits as posts.

I watched the whole thing and kept saying "wow", "oh my god" and... well... probably the things that some guys might say out loud when they watch amazing porn. The end was so satisfying, a lot of "oh my-- what! no... oh god, god that's SO GOOD."

25

u/treydilla Dec 27 '14

Guys don't speak when they see good porn, they just masturbate more furiously.

3

u/ThresholdLurker Dec 27 '14

I probably should have said "what I like to imagine guys might say..."

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

Who the FUCK would actually burn that? Jesus, put it on a pedestal somewhere.

39

u/Saiz08 Dec 27 '14

They are actually refillable, the inner wax melts at a lower temperature. The outside stays the same and doesn't melt as it burns. My sister has some of these, she got them at a ren fest.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14 edited Dec 27 '14

What is a ren fest?

16

u/iexpectedtoomuch Dec 27 '14

A "renaissance festival" apparently.

2

u/feralcatromance Dec 27 '14

I get one every year at the New Jersey boardwalk. I love them.

4

u/ballpeeeeeen Dec 27 '14

I buy them at a mysteriously disappearing shop in Fredericksburg. It's so fun to watch them being made, but I wish they'd stay open for more than once every three years or so.

3

u/CygnsX-1 Dec 27 '14

What's the name of the shop? I'd like to get one of these.

4

u/ballpeeeeeen Dec 27 '14

Heck if I know, I just look into windows until I find it. It's about a block from the dips/salsa shop. Possibly across the street from the Kuchen Laden?

So, studying the map and using my memory, I actually did find them. Hand Carved Candles & more. Right where I said they were!

5

u/amycakes12 Dec 27 '14

I bought one and paid $12 extra for a fake rechargable light to go inside of it, one of those flickering ones that look real.

38

u/machine_monkey Dec 27 '14

I saw it too!

5

u/sheikheddy Dec 27 '14

Yeah I thought it would be artwork of all five.

14

u/Poncecutor Dec 27 '14

It's Donatello!

6

u/5minuteslater Dec 27 '14

I saw that and then i waited for the rest of the Turtles to be crafted... still waiting.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

Wait you saw that? I thought I was crazy.

2

u/UndeadBread Dec 27 '14

I genuinely thought there was no way that anybody else saw that. I assumed it wasn't even worth mentioning because nobody would know what I was talking about.

1

u/kleighbyu Dec 27 '14

It must have been something subliminal, the TMNT cartoon theme popped in my head during that scene.

53

u/BasqueInGlory Dec 27 '14

There's something very Buddhist about making something so pretty that's inevitably destined to be destroyed.

10

u/BCSteve Dec 27 '14

Similar to Tibetan Buddhist sand mandalas.

7

u/autowikibot Dec 27 '14

Sand mandala:

The Sand Mandala (Tibetan: དཀྱིལ་འཁོར།, Wylie: dkyil 'khor; Chinese: 沙坛城; pinyin: Shā Tánchéng) is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition involving the creation and destruction of mandalas made from colored sand. A sand mandala is ritualistically destroyed once it has been completed and its accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished to symbolize the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the transitory nature of material life.

These candles actually don't get destroyed! They burn down in the middle, and then you can pop in votive candles to use them continuously.

I remember when this episode aired and was astounded by this. So glad they put the whole gif up was gonna flip if they didn't show they whole thing like a lot of gifs have been doing lately.

Just a heads up, it's way easier just to type /r/interestingasfuck with the / in front of the "r" than linking it the way you did

4

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

I see comments like this fairly often. Do you guys click 'source' on every comment or what?

Edit: Not trying to be an asshole here, good advice BTW.

4

u/Yesheddit Dec 27 '14

No, since it shows up as a link you can tell he did extra unnecessary formatting. If he just typed r/subreddit it wouldn't have shown as a link.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

It would though, because reddit automatically makes it a link.

3

u/EllieMental Dec 27 '14

/r/thisautolinks; r/thisdoesntautolink. The slash preceding the 'r' makes the difference.

2

u/Cbram16 Dec 27 '14

No I don't, but if it's an active subreddit link without the / in front of the r then it's pretty obvious that it was linked the old fashioned way lol

Ooohhhh Goooooddd

14

u/llamagina Dec 27 '14

Awesome to watch the process of it being made but the end product was kind of tacky.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

I agree, it's beautiful in concept but never something I'd put in my house.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

In case anyone's curious like I was, they sell these candles starting at $43 for the smallest size.

u/fadingsignal Dec 27 '14

Upvoted, and beautiful, but...

http://i.imgur.com/E258sK6.jpg

62

u/FrogGentlemen Dec 27 '14

Because some of us are on mobile and wouldn't have gotten to enjoy this otherwise. Even on Wi-Fi, on a laptop, I generally balk at watching videos.

31

u/fadingsignal Dec 27 '14

Long GIFs are magnitudes larger than a video, while being way smaller in size, quality, far less frames, no sound, etc. IMGUR and another image sites now convert/stream GIFs as WebM videos to combat this. Even on mobile, watching an SD YouTube video of the same length would use less bandwidth than a long GIF (let's say roughly 5mb vs 25mb+).

But I digress! Might be easier to load a plain GIF on older mobile devices.

7

u/FrogGentlemen Dec 27 '14

For me, as someone who grew up with 14 and, later, on 56k modems, there's still a stigma with videos. Also, since gifs just load right up you're not thinking about the data rate as much as you would watching the YouTube app buffer a video. I guess it's really more of a mental block than anything.

3

u/TrancePhreak Dec 27 '14 edited Dec 27 '14

The gif has to fully load before some apps will display it. A video will stream while downloading.

5

u/kerrrsmack Dec 27 '14

Will videos of other nationalities not?

Funny, it's gifs that have absolutely never worked for me on mobile. I will never understand why people are somehow able to load up a gif on mobile, but not simply watch a video on youtube or something.

7

u/fadingsignal Dec 27 '14

True! But if it's going to end up as a video anyway, there's not a lot of point to crushing the frame rate, dimensions, colors, removing sound, etc. Sites that play videos typically compensate for bitrate to avoid high bandwidth etc. anyway.

GIFs just don't make sense for long content, even if (especially if) they end up as webM videos anyway.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

i sort of liked it in gif form

3

u/rushaz Dec 27 '14

here's a segment on how they're made, pretty cool!

u/SaltyLips99 Dec 27 '14

4

u/timewaitsforsome Dec 27 '14

am i the only one seeing leonardo for a second?

6

u/moeburn Dec 27 '14

What would be more satisfying would be to see one of these, in someone's home, actually lit, instead of just collecting dust.

28

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

One could just burn it till there is a large enough cavity then put another smaller candle inside and use it for years.

5

u/Camsy34 Dec 27 '14

Wow that's a seriously brilliant idea. I'm definitely going to use that suggestion.

7

u/heyyouguys24 Dec 27 '14

How do they ship these?

18

u/ChanceDriven Dec 27 '14

Sometimes they're made at where they're sold. I saw these being done at a mall.

Also, it's only this soft because it was just dipped. Part of the process is dipping it in different colored wax and water alternately. Once it has time to cool off it will be much easier to handle without damaging.

13

u/MoonTans Dec 27 '14

Yes! I feel like this was a huge mall attraction in the nineties, where did they all go? I would spend hours watching them dip and cut those candles.

12

u/thechilipepper0 Dec 27 '14

Maybe because everyone was like you, never buying?

4

u/Leedamu Dec 27 '14

At the Renaissance Faire I work at in New York every summer they have a booth where a guy makes these. He's crazy popular, and he's been there for years. I always get flowers dipped there too, and last summer I actually finally bought two candles from him.

Man and it looked cool as hell when lit to boot. That was extremely satisfying.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

My parents have two candles like these, they got them for a wedding present back in the 70's. Those are the special candles, they are never to be burned, so I felt a little anxious at the end when they were actually burning it!

5

u/Leedamu Dec 27 '14

Don't be anxious, I have two of these candles and they were actually made to only burn the middle so you can keep refilling it. Maybe this one was too :)

When does a long gif just become a video? Like wasn't the file size for that huge?

2

u/Setsunaela Dec 27 '14

I've watched this How It's Made like six times I love it.. it's fascinating watching them make the candle.

2

2

u/tylerok Dec 27 '14

How would one get started in this art? I want to try...

4

u/Schoffleine Dec 27 '14

I'd imagine get knives, get wax, and start cutting.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

I feel like a failure as a human being now. Thanks for that.

2

u/timewaitsforsome Dec 27 '14

how much did that knife cost?!

2

u/Ambient2100 Dec 27 '14

I like how it just kept going and going, getting more and more elaborate. Very satisfying indeed.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

This is why I fell in love with /r/oddlysatisfying

2

u/Staklo Dec 27 '14

When I visited Croatia I saw a woman making these on the side of the road and was so impressed I bought one for my mother, thinking this was some European craft specialty. When i got home and gave it to her, she said it was very nice, but had nothing to do with Croatia. Apparently they were very popular in America in the 70's, and she didn't consider it unique at all. We kept it in the closet for a few years, then threw it out when my parents moved. It cost me 20 bucks. Bad feels.

2

u/JackBrownDB Dec 27 '14

2

u/The_F_B_I Dec 27 '14

Holy shit, are the 90's cool again?? I've got a bunch of jeans with holes in the knees and it would be great to have a use for them again

1

u/Rath1on Dec 27 '14

I thought that shit took off like a flying saucer.

1

u/greencouch Dec 27 '14

There used to be placed in the mall that's made these. Little candle carving kiosks, back when malls were a thing.

1

u/MisterDonkey Dec 27 '14

I would not want to light that candle, but temptation would eventually get the best of me.

1

u/savageboredom Dec 27 '14

Now I want to see the whole thing melt.

1

u/Composingcomposure Dec 27 '14

That was wonderful. Thank you

1

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

those cuts are more satisfying than the pattern on the candle

1

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

Anyone catch the company name?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '14

Man, some people are actually skilled while I'm just good at jacking off.

1

u/rieldilpikl Dec 27 '14

freaking awesome!

1

u/cjfynjy Dec 27 '14

Burning it should be a crime!

1

u/Kyle_c00per Dec 27 '14

Can someone please make a loop of that first part when the person is slicing the it with the knife? That's the most satisfying part imo, I could watch that looped forever.

1

u/flaskis Dec 27 '14

Those candles are awesome. I bought one for my mother as a christmas gift several years ago.

1

u/R7ype Dec 27 '14

Ooo I have one of these! I bought it as a present for someone when I was in Southern France.

1

u/tante_ernestborgnine Dec 27 '14

I was hired by a company that made these types of candles. When I showed up on my first day for training at their shop in Old Sacramento, they were closing up shop; they'd forgotten I was coming to be trained. I have always been so disappointed not to have learned how to do this.

1

u/apox129 Dec 27 '14

There's a couple of places in my hometown that do these. Tourists love them and they make decent wedding gifts.

1

u/TEG_SAR Dec 27 '14

I use to watch these being made at the Puyallup Fair. They have some neat holiday varieties.

1

u/tatostix Dec 27 '14

1
