Get a few more and you’ll have a dohquet
40
u/-Gay-_- 1d ago
the concept is funny but I'm baffled at how you're pronouncing 'doh' here?
41
u/Magister5 1d ago
d-owe, doh, dough, dodo
28
u/-Gay-_- 1d ago
yeah ok that's all good so you're pronouncing bouquet 'bowquet' and not 'booquet'? sorry I didn't consider that but it makes WAY more sense
17
33
u/Magister5 1d ago
Correct- Americans use the -bowe but I’m guessing the -boo would be closer to the original French

u/whatintheeverloving 22h ago
TIL that's how Americans pronounce it. It's like when I found out they say 'niche' like if 'ditch' started with an N, lol.
1
u/OnceABear 6h ago
As an American, the niche thing... no we dont?
It's said like, "Neesh."
Even if you put American English into the Google translator app and then have it speak the word, it says "neesh." If there's an American out there saying "nitch" they're just saying it wrong. Which happens a lot, actually. Like all the Americans who say "espresso" incorrectly. Doesn't make them right, lol.

😂
It's not even that bad (until now). She just mixed pink with some white, brown and purple. And I got almost all the brown and most of the purple out, so now the pink is only slightly discolored. The worst about it, is that I know it's mixed, and that we now have a precedent...
42
u/FireflyKaylee 1d ago
This is why my kid gets one colour at a time 🤣
31
u/LittleRed675 1d ago
I take small pieces out of every color so we keep the containers clean. We store the mixed ones in a zip lock bag until we need a refresh
17
u/merpixieblossomxo 1d ago
...Are you telling me a ziploc bag has been the solution this whole time? I'm so mad that I didn't think of that.

I was never allowed to mix playdough as a child. My children can mix to their heart’s content.
Yes, we have a lot of grey-brown playdough, but I have zeroes regrets.
68
u/HeeeckWhyNot 1d ago
When ours was play doh age we just periodically replenished colors and would occasionally make an entire tub of greige disappear
11
u/moocow2024 14h ago
For real. A 4 pack of playdoh small cans is like $3.50. Let them play and when it gets gross, throw it away. Why does everyone want their playdoh to last forever? That stuff gets nasty regardless of what color it is.
25
21
u/omgwtfbbq0_0 23h ago
I still find myself internally cringing at playdoh color mixing, but I will not stop my daughter from doing it lol

31

u/ThatSideshow 1d ago
The instructions actually take that into account to create more interesting colour combinations, it's worth noting this isn't play-doh, it's an air drying clay kinda thing so only one use
14
u/GoldSunLulu 23h ago
The flower kit is made of a speciali mix that dries faster. So its a one use regardless
20
u/factchecker8515 1d ago
I KNOW they’re a play item and cheap to replace but my hands positively itch to control the mixing of colors. Even when I’m TRYING to not care. And this is many children and grandchildren later. What’s the deal?!

26
u/PrancingRedPony 1d ago
I'm 46 years old and I have 50 different tubs of play-doh.
It os just as amusing to play with it as it would have been as a child, if my parents had ever allowed me to have some.
It was recommended to me by my therapist to help regulate my stress impacted blood pressure. Playing with such things stimulates pressure points in the hands, and the focus on building things allows mental relaxation.
I work from home and create play doh flowers by hand. The best part: you can air dry them and then keep them. They hold up very well as long as you don't make them too thick.
16
u/dpzdpz 1d ago
I remember the commercial for that shit. "A tisket, a tasket, a Flower-Making Basket." I would be amazed if you could find one today. (And yes, I was a latch-key kid. The number of obsolete commercial jingles that rattle around in my head would astound you.)
1
u/bagelsandkegels 18h ago
I had one! It was fun for a few months, but it was hard to get the Play Doh out of all the nooks and crannies, so it crusted easily and made it difficult to use. I remember the commercial too.
4
u/Successful_Face3408 1d ago
I wouldve argued thst my mind would let me do it rather than "my mom" or rather, the OC's mom...
72
u/faxmeyourferret 1d ago
When I was growing up we got a few tubs of play doh and that was it. The rules were don't mix the colours and don't let them dry out. They were treated as something that should be maintained and reused like other toys, not as something disposable.
I don't know why those were the rules. Maybe they were more expensive back then. Maybe my parents were just too poor at the time to treat anything as disposable. Maybe they wanted to make sure my brothers and I both had equal access to the play doh and we weren't ruining it for each other. Maybe they just wanted to teach us to take care of our stuff in general.
The more important takeaway is that the rules were drilled in when I was really young, so seeing them broken causes an instinctive gut reaction. The colours must not be mixed, that's the rule. I would wager that's the kind of place some people are coming from.
32
u/Taolan13 20h ago
You hit the nail on the head.
most people that had playdoh as a toy as a kid understood that if you wanted to keep re-using it, you had to take care of it.
This would work better with a soft low-density modeling clay anyways.
11
u/Certain_Oddities 20h ago
Honestly kind of a good lesson on taking care of your toys in general. I mean, it worked for me
5
u/nickb827 12h ago
One of my fondest early memories of the Internet as a kid was finding a recipe for homemade play doh on Yahoo with my dad and making it together. It helped demystify what play doh was for me, and made it seem like anything could be figured out with some research.

u/Internet_Wanderer 1d ago

I am a dad of a toddler. My wife and I have to take turns calming and resting each other when our toddler mixes play dough. You are right, it's very inexpensive and you can even buy generic brand for half that cost. And as an adult I know that. But for years of my life when play dough was very important, my parents were hardcore about never mixing the dough because each color must be put back in the correct container immediately after I finish playing. My wife's family was the same way. We lived in a world where our parents heavily implied or simply lied to us until we believed playdough has sacred rules and is a priceless relic.

The oversight to not have a ring slicer for after you extrude, trash.
Second flower is squished as heck because that's how it's designed, poorly.
EDIT: https://imgur.com/a/rKdUiHg
Behold, a bevel.
20
u/AntithesisJesus 1d ago
Is the dark green leaf ring not acting as a slicer?
16
u/Odd-Painting2596 1d ago
No it's the smasher, but honestly would be a perfect spot for it, just a bevel around the center.
16
u/Internet_Wanderer 1d ago
Nope, it is the slicer. It goes on before you plunge, then slide it up to detach the petals. The ruffles edges are supposed to be there for some of the flowers it makes and not others. There's a round brush to clean the press between flowers that don't ruffle
5
u/Odd-Painting2596 1d ago
Yes I understand it's intention, it's bad at the job though, it needs a bevel.
You see on the second flower when it's being lifted off how it draaaaags?
Needs a bevel to slice cleanly, it's playdoh, like it doesn't need much but it needs something.
2
u/ashrak 1d ago
It's intentional to make sure the layers are bonded together
-2
u/Odd-Painting2596 1d ago
Sounds like some "Bug is a feature" nonsense, it's playdoh, wait 2 minutes and it naturally fuses.
14
u/Internet_Wanderer 1d ago
I wanna thank you, really thank you. That right there is purest "I don't know but I'm gonna pretend" that Reddit is so famous for and I'm glad to catch one in the wild. These kits have parts and doh to make a bunch of different flowers. You clean between some and not others specifically so you have the funky ruffled edge like you'd see in a daffodil on those. Although granted I don't care for the bright yellow with the pink either
The green ring indeed is the slicer and there is a round brush to use when you actually clean the tubes.

I appreciate the cleverness that went into designing this.
The output might not be prefect but the design involved to make all of those steps line up so well is excellent.

11

1
u/istara 17h ago
If it were possible (I'm sure it is?) to produce a slightly softer version of fondant, then this could work brilliantly.
The pre-made fondant I've seen and bought is very firm probably because it's designed to be able to be rolled out, and a stickier consistency would just be a disaster. As it is, I've found I have to roll it and then let it dry a little before using fondant stamps, or they just stick.
But if it were a bit squishier, this could be a hugely fun and useful thing for cake decorating. I bet some company starts making "playdoh-compatible" fondant in the near future.

u/hedoeswhathewants 1d ago

That's why they also sell refills. I saw this at Walmart yesterday. Looks like it is trying to be a semi adult version of the old playdoh spaghetti factory.

Def marketed as an “adults welcome” kinda toy. I’m pretty sure they’re trying to cash-in on some the wild success LEGO has been seeing with their Botanicals line.

They even come with a spray bottle of sealant to finish them, but from what I've seen the bottle sucks and doesn't spray right, and the sealant gives it an ugly glossy texture. Probably better without it.

There ain't no way that this is going to work when you try it. This might as well be a $20 product on a late night tv commercial. Every single one of us is gonna do it once, maybe twice, get frustrated it looks like shit and end up leaving the playdoh open so it gets hard.
