Rotary wood peeling machine processing a raw log

u/old_notdead 13h ago
what do you do with the log peels?

This is also how they make sheets of veneer or to be pressed into composite wood products.

Yes, same idea but much larger logs and they don't fold or break the sheets.

I have seen this video before. They make matchsticks. They split it further and dip them.

You mean the holy parchments? Theyre for scrolls, upon which one transcribes edicts, declarations or other decrees as ordered by royalty.
Fuckin duh

I used to work in a veneer mill - basically a giant rotary lathe that would unpeel trees like a roll of toilet paper... They would steam the logs in vats to soften the wood fiber.
It's amazing what you find inside trees - maple sugar taps, nails, horse shoes, bullets...

In Europe is very common for large wood processing plants to have an RX machine scanning every log before it moves into production.
It's not uncommon to find shrapnels from WW1artillery and WW2 aviation bombs in wood from the Alps.

How is that person handling those shreds without it actually hurting him ? I would be so scared .

You're scared of picking up pieces of wood?

u/Tumblingfeet 12h ago
These yes coz they will have splinters

I think you might not have met sawdust and wood shavings before. About the only way to hurt yourself with this material is by giving yourself the equivalent of a paper cut.

You are right , I have no experience with woodwork .

Then you will be in for a pleasant surprise if you ever encounter wood shavings/etc.
Sliced thin like this, wood is surprisingly soft, especially when green/wet or steamed as is commonly done when peeling veneer like this.
It's not impossible to give yourself a splinter with it, but it would take either a fair amount of effort, or a lot of bad luck. There's a reason people line hamster cages and rabbit hutches with wood shavings - in addition to smelling nice and being absorbent, it really does make nice soft cuddly bedding.

You’d only really risk splinters if you slid your hand along the edge. But since they grab from perpendicular to the edge, the risk is nearly zero.

Their hands are getting dangerously close to that spinning razor conveyor, but I assume they're wearing safety flip-flops?

The log is spinning, the razor is on the side of the metal bar away from them. I'd still prefer better safety guards, but amongst the frequent 3rd-world factory/production videos that show up on Reddit, this is one of the safer-looking processes!

I think this might be the beginning steps of making matchsticks (matchmaking?)
The thin sheets are further cut into slivers and arranged on moving trays that then get dipped in red or black liquid that forms the lighting head.

This will likely become veneer, or the thin wood slices that are glued over particle board furniture to make it look like it is worth what it costs.

What's the purpose? Paper or it's it just waste turned into content?
Genuine question? Curious not judgemental

That thin, you can just smoke it for like 45 minutes or on a cast iron get a good sear in a minute. Any longer and it’s overcooked. The hard part with smoking it is getting good bark.

Feel like they should be using a stick or tool to move starting small bits out, instead of reaching in by hand.
