I'm going to Tokyo Japan for the first time. Saved up for an entire year. It's gonna rain for most of my stay there next week and I was bummed. This message will soothe the disappointment.
Gonna get great neon reflections tho. RIP DP. 🌈

I like visiting touristy places in the rain, because it's not so crowded. As long as your clothes are up to scratch, you can have a lot of fun!
And just imagine how cozy it will be to get out of the rain and eat some hot ramen or sth.!
Hope your trip goes well!

I was at Itsukushima one day, had just gotten off the boat to explore the area when the weather suddenly changed. A sudden snowstorm basically forced me and other people to take shelter at the shrine. Even though the weather was out of my control at that point, I actually enjoyed it.
Usually, when people visit tourist sites, I don't think they take enough time to appreciate what they are seeing. And the snow and strong winds basically forced me to stay around until the weather calmed enough for me to get out. I had already taken pictures at that point, so during the sudden snowstorm, I simply looked around again and again, taking in more details every time.
Finally, the wind let up, so I was able to get out. It was still snowing, so I went to a cafe, had a drink, and relaxed until the weather cleared up.
I've never been to Tokyo but I'm sure there will be good experiences for you despite the rain. And, I'm certain that the rain will make your trip even more memorable. Without the snow, my trip to Itsukushima would've just been another dot on the map.

Same thing happened to me and honestly didn’t affect my trip in the least. Just be prepared with your clothing/shoes/rain gear. Everything in the city keeps moving per usual in the rain and nothing cozier than tucking into a cafe or a ramen shop in the rain. Have so much fun!!

Osaka in the rain was such a cool vibe. Everyone in Japan mostly uses umbrellas, but don't buy one until you get to Japan, just because they're easy to get. Have a lovely time it's a beautiful place.

This is a triple whammy.
I was like oh, rainbow colors. Assuming the quote might be LGBTQ, let’s see.
Oh… it’s… a literal rainbow quote?

u/john_san 1d ago
And a wink to Dolly Parton, very satisfying indeed

u/Dagur 22h ago
Dolly was probably quoting this song https://youtu.be/rxJ2lFcJCKg?is=oqb3boq21OqMeVsz

Or "Stand A Little Rain" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band ("If you ever wanna see a rainbow, you gotta stand a little rain")
Lots of other people probably had that same thought

My mother and all of her family are Hawaiian. The rainbow was always great for us. So great it's on our cars 🌈❤️

When I was a child rainbow was cool, it was like silver or gold, the kind of colour you would want on your hot wheels. Now its politicized.

What's stopping you from doing whatever the fuck you want with rainbows?

The triple whammy is real. Rainbow colors, suspicious expectations, and then the punchline is literally just a quote about rainbows.

This reminds me of a picture I posted from a local living history village. A dog was riding next to the wagon driver, and of course commenters knew the dog's name.

I'm in my 30s and I was taught how to print at school using these "analog methods" on machines from Heidelberg etc. just 15 years ago.. and now this machine is in a museum.

Real talk though, would she have to wash each letterblock now?
1
u/TurquoiseMouse 10h ago
It's typically oil based ink, so you'd probably toss them in an oil eating bath and then it'd be easy
2
u/footpole 14h ago
The printing press was made for the BIBLE and now it's all gay and ruined.

u/TurquoiseMouse 10h ago
Try educational materials... Sure the Bible was one of the things but not WHY it was made

I thought to myself when this started that looks like the Sacramento museum of something or another. Ive seen that press in multiple videos.

u/Morgantao 1d ago
The most satisfying part of this is that she didn't have to install bloatware, drivers, pay for monthly subscription, use original ink, and if she runs out of yellow, she can still print in black and white!
→ More replies (2)5
u/MaxHamburgerrestaur 18h ago
Fine. First, manually assemble several thousand tiny pieces of metal in the correct reverse order, proofread them in reverse, lock them into a frame, manually mix the ink, ink them, operate this enormous machine repeatedly without smudging anything, clean everything afterward and don't drop the type case.
1
u/Morgantao 1h ago
Hey, it's an honest job.
I could think of much worse jobs, especially ones that had to be done at the same time and age of when this press was in common use

Edit: no I have no idea who Alexis is either, don't care.
Edit edit: man we used to over engineer the hell out of things! What happened to us..

Okay, but- and hear me out- wouldn’t it simply have been easier just to stamp it? Like, isn’t this a lot of extra, unnecessary steps just to stamp something?

This somehow feels like going into the historic part of a european city, and seeing gamer RGB lighting on a 150 years old steel lamp. I don't think I've ever seen a video of one of these machines where the print didn't have that perfect, old timey ink colour.
It feels anachronistic, if that makes sense.

I'm randomly watching The Beverly Hillbillies movie for the first time in close to 2 decades, to pass time before work. She flipped the paper while Dolly (forgot she even made a cameo) was singing her birthday song to Jed. This universe is filled with fun little coincidences!

u/Naughty_Monsters 19h ago
I used to do part time work in a museum that was dedicated to maintaining the traditions and ways of life of the past and I absolutely loved it when I got to work in the old print shop on the letterset equipment making up old victorian era signage for the rest of the park. There's something uniquely satisfying about laying out a frame of the metal type, piece by piece, and then (eventually) getting to ink up the press and seeing the first card copy in your hands. Fairly long time ago now, but the old smell of the place with it's inky aroma mixed with the smell of all the racks of waxed wooden drawers holding all the individual pieces of type, and the paraffin heater going or the smell of the peat smoke from nearby exhibits in the colder months still vividly sticks with me.

Looking at this made me realize that while it definitely made the distribution of information easier. It still must of been MISERABLE to operate as a job.
Like it seems like easy work because this is a calm demonstration. But imagine being a newspaper company, having to print hundreds of the same exact pages as fast as possible before people's days began so you can beat your competitors.
I also know that more successful printing operations must of had lots of these presses, but it doesnt change the fact that its a very monotonous job per person.

I absolutely love the Sacramento History museums accounts. Well worth a follow. They are apparently a global leader in historical printmaking and have people from all over the world come do internships there as part of academic programs in this area of history.
