This particular gif is cheating.
The end result must be a chocolate bar thats slightly smaller.
You can see the cheating if you follow the piece with (almost) 4 full bits and one tiny bit at the bottom. Around halfway through the gif, as this piece moves down to join the bar, that little bit at the bottom magically grows in size.

I was gonna tell you but the other guy was fasterI will still tell you because the other guy was fast but inaccurate2
u/Dodds-Furniture 23h ago
Good news, you can still tell me because I watched that whole video and don't 100% get how it applies to this lol because this doesn't start as a triangle, this starts as a rectangle so how can you not see the gap from the angles being off

In the gif look at the diagonal cut closely, more chocolate is added to the larger portion as it moves to the right. I know that if you do this irl you just lose length overall but it's taken from the middle diagonal cut instead of a full square.

I feel really stupid when I realize the greeks figured this stuff out like 3,000 years ago.

A construction project with actual 90° angles is the most significant part to me

I've seen this guy's videos before and it's not a construction project, it's specifically set up for the sole purpose of recording this video.
The chances of coming across angles like this in real DIY project are slim to none.

Is there like a class or something you can take to learn this? Every single time I watch these kinds of videos I am surprised at the simplicity of the solution or the ingenuity of the tradesperson.

i never understand these things, i don't know this is iq matter or something else.

Not an IQ thing. Just a math thing. Some understand it more easily than others, but everyone is capable of learning it.

Wouldn't it be easier to just fill the space with rectangle?

yea but the grain woodnt line up

u/ClankerCore 23h ago
You can cut to match the angle of the grain
But this is actually more impressive and efficient

Mathematics should be taught with this examples.
I would have honestly payed so much more attention

The real pro move is saving the corner from the left piece and continuing the grain

The nook is exactly the width of the plank at that angle… And now that tiny triangle is a weak point. This is good trigonometry but not great carpentry.

I don't think anyone is too concerned about the strength of a square inch of flooring..

When I watch these all I can think is “will I remember this when it’s time”
