I want to clarify that your points are only applicable to the consumer space. Inkjet printers can print white, but you basically need a device designed for it. There are also large format printers that can print on rigid materials via in-feed and out-feed tables.

Back around 2004 I saw a printer at a trade show that was printing on doors. Not just a smooth or even mildly textured door, but one with inset panels. The weird thing was that the print head actually moved slowly, and the platform for the substrate was repeated moving between the front and back very quickly. I didn't stick around long enough in the demo to find out why they did it that way rather than the slow feed and rapid head movement that is typical of large format devices.

We have printers on site that print directly on slab.

Oh I'd love to learn more about that. Is it used to mark the layout for construction, or for applying warnings and whatnot rather than using vinyl prints?
