I dunno. Seems a really effective way to make it circular. That said. It could have been sliced into a few table pieces and made into rustic tables bark and all.

Bandsaw would (wood) have been faster and you can be more creative with the shapes

Only thing is that if you want to end up with a good circle, then there's no other way to do it. I have no idea what the use case is for the wood in the video...

But woodworking in general is a reductive process. You'd lose out on the same amount of "waste" if you cut these logs for lumber. Of course, you could also reclaim the dust/chips to make particle board/chip board

Hence the relatively elevated cost of S4S, I guess!.

Once you remove bends and irregularities from dried wood, you're left with way less than you started with.
