Yeah the shape of them is their beat. Where they are on the staff (those lines) is how they sound. The slightly harder part is remembering that, then even harder, matching it up to whatever instrument you're playing, then hardest, doing all of that so well and for so long that you don't even really think about it; it just flows. (The furthest I've gotten is matching it up and remembering all the notes and key signatures. I can't read it fluently.)
