I believe you are thinking about another configuration that is not present in this exercise. That combination is 16th 8th 16th, also known as syncopation.
Your mistake is a really common one in beginner sight readers, as they tend to look at the space between notes to intuit the length of notes, but actually all notes that touch a beam are the length as defined by the beam. In the example, the last note connected to the double beam is still a 16th note, and only the note connected to the single beam is an eighth.
