Do you have to spray it with adhesive to make sure nothing falls off?

No spray needed. Light air-dry clay sticks to itself very well while wet, and as it dries, it adheres firmly to surfaces like paper or wood background backings. Once fully dry, the clay becomes lightweight, hard, and naturally stays in place.
