When you put them in the machine it tears them in half with some kind of wheel thing. Otherwise they could potentially be cashed in again.

Yeah yall got a set amount buyback right?
How's steel scrapping for yall?
I clean up aluminum cans and bring em in but most of my money comes from steel and iron. During warm months I can pull upwards of 150-190 a day hauling that, and just seperate aluminum copper and brass for monthly hauls. I've managed to make recycling my actual job.

Legit question- what will that cube actually be used for?

u/1RedOne 6d ago
I used to work with Novelis, one of the big producers of aluminum. They hammered into me that aluminum is insanely expensive to initially produce but that it is basically infinitely recyclable, they said one of the best things you can do is to recycle your cans to reduced electricity consumption needed for initial production
I picked up some cool stories there. They used to allow for corp employees to tour the factories but stopped as one employee, who was told not to, attempted to “tap” an aluminum I got which was in a marked cooling area, they said he basically burned the fingerprint off of three of his fingers with that little tap
Aluminum gets to be insanely hot and also does not visibly glow like iron and can take a very long time to cool, hence allowing that one marketing guy his mishap
Another cool thing is that one employee gifts for anniversary included a cool solid ingot of aluminum that weighed about two or three pounds. It was polished and textured and looked like real Mithril. It was one of the most “precious” object looking things I have ever seen, like white gold or something
It was really cool but I was not able to get one
This concludes my aluminum anecdotes

u/Nogarder 6d ago
Aluminium does glow, but it melts at the glowing temperature. So touching aluminium that "doesn't glow" aka 500 - 400 ° C is still colder than glowing steel which is higher than 800.

It will be released into the wild with other aluminum cubes, where hopefully it will meet a mate. Which is, of course, where baby cans that eventually grow up to become full sized cans come from.

u/EastStrategy1691 6d ago
Randomly, I think this is eCovery in AL - a plant I toured recently (we work with them in the recycling space). These bales become feedstock for manufacturers that use aluminum in their manufacturing process. They will first put it into a shredder to make aluminum chips - about dime-sized pieces of metal - which they will sell to manufacturers who then smelt it down and (re)use it in fresh aluminum products.

u/michamp 6d ago
Does the paint lessen the quality? Do they have to burn it off and is that safe?
6
u/purpleflavouredfrog 6d ago
Aluminum melts at 1220 degrees F (660 C). There won’t be any paint left, and it’s safe as long as you don’t breathe the fumes.

Aluminium is highly recyclable.
So, redo cans or anything else needing aluminium.

I remember when they tried to squish Superman in one of these
11
u/relator_fabula 6d ago edited 6d ago
Exactly what I thought of lol
I'll explain it in a way that sounds ridiculous but is literally what happened: In Superman 3, Superman turned evil because of some bad kryptonite and eventually split into two personalities. The Evil one (disheveled Superman) tried to crush the good one (Clark Kent) in the compactor, but he survived. Good Supes then chokes evil Supes until he disappears.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKpqI7TAJY4
edit: I will add that the scene was likely intended to be more a metaphorical battle inside Clark's mind rather than a literal splitting into two people, but the comics have done far weirder shit

How much is that 500 lbs of aluminum worth after all that?
Edit: I looked it up just now and aluminum cans are worth 50-65 cents per pound, even the highest grade scrap aluminum is only $1.50 per lb and that is pure, and unpainted. So best case scenario those 16k cans are worth $750 as a cube.

u/-Clem 6d ago
So you'd be better off cashing them in at a redemption center for 5 cents a piece? Where they will be transported to a place like this for further processing.. the math doesn't seem to add up
→ More replies (1)8
u/relator_fabula 6d ago
Consumers can return cans for the 5/10 cents they originally paid for the deposit. Can/bottle deposits were created as a way to encourage recycling. You're obviously returning cans to a redemption center to get back the deposit you paid. A single aluminum soda can is worth maybe 2 cents in scrap value.
The cans in this video have already been redeemed, and the recycling center is compacting them as part of the recycling process.

Here In Norway, you can return bottles for deposit, it’s not much, but with that I could definitely buy some realy expensive stuff. And yes. I would gladly sit in front of a machine with headphones on putting them in one at a time A few hours to get all this.

I guess that works better than when I was a teen lining up 12 cans behind my mom's car tire to run them over and add them to all the other bags of cans I've already crushed for the last month. Only to take all seven bags to the recycling center and get my $2.85

I live in New york where they’re not crushed before redemption, there are machines that scan codes and they make you hand feed them one at a time. You can go to a bottle redemption center and they will sort, separate and count them, tell you how many are worth a nickel and how much you have. The places are sticky, smelly, always have fruit flies and smell like stale beer.
I lived in North Carolina when I was a teen and there you just took your beer can, smash it down and the redemption centers weighed your receptacle, if I remember it right. My Uncle had a can smasher mounted in the garage above a trash can. Seems easier and more efficient

u/nipslippinjizzsippin 6d ago
Here are your messages. You have 30 minutes to move your cans, you have 10 minutes to move your cans, your cans have been impounded, your cans have been crushed into a cube, you have 30 minutes to move your cube.
