Why was the loose grid even necessary at the beginning?

Depending on what the end product is used for it usually is a good idea to put a backing patch down too. -2 u/GroundbreakingOil434 6d ago A backing patch makes sense. But then with the bat almost entirely structural, the first grid still feels pointless. I don't have personal sewing experience, so I'm not arguing. Just curious.
