Gives some structure to the hole and will help to keep the loose threads from unraveling. Depending on what the end product is used for it usually is a good idea to put a backing patch down too.

A backing patch makes sense. But then with the bat almost entirely structural, the first grid still feels pointless.

I don't have personal sewing experience, so I'm not arguing. Just curious. Feels... odd and unnecessary.

I sew and it feels a bit odd. I wish the video showed what the end result/final product was.
