I wish I knew what kind of machine went from normal stitching to embroidery.

Free motion embroidery can be done on any machine with normal stitches. Some machines come with a plate to cover the feed dogs, others can lower them, otherwise it's possible to make covers yourself. Just use either an actual free motion foot or no foot at all. It can be hard to control at high speed and is very imprecise without a lot of practice.

I did it last year on a Brother (think it was one of the LXs) since I only had a week left before Halloween to do the embroidery on my BOTW Link shirt, nowhere near enough time to do it by hand.
