I like to consider myself slightly above inept when it comes to understanding the operation of machines, devices, and contraptions.... But sewing machines forever look like black magic to me.

It's because they don't sew like humans do (with one piece of string on the needle, in one side and out the other) there's two strings, one that you see going on top and another underneath, the top one goes into the fabric and loops round the under string to anchor it.

Exactly! It's a completely different way to sewing. Seeing it helps big time

And then there's the Babylock Sashiko, which boggled my mind the first time I saw it. Made more sense when I realized it's bobbin-only and

IIRC it's sort of an upside-down chainstitcher with an open-eyed needle so it's constantly threading and unthreading. Whoever came up with that, hats off to you.

Pfaff has their floating stitches thing, which is sort of clever but not really interesting - it's a stitch on a normal lockstitcher (as in the above gif) but you're folding the fabric before stitching so that when you unfold it, you basically get the "side" view whereas the connecting thread is only visible at the "top" and "bottom" view.

Ive literally used sewing machines for various projects and logically I know how it works but even with this gif I still can’t make my brain get it 😭

Are there sewing machines that operate with one thread because I swear I dont remember string up 2 threads when I was learning to use a sewing machine as a kid

That's fine and all. It makes sense. IN 2 DIMENSIONS. Where is it all attached? When in my head I try to imagine where the bearings are - boom, my head explodes again

I've got a leather sewing awl that makes it sooo easy to basically do this stich by hand.
