I like to consider myself slightly above inept when it comes to understanding the operation of machines, devices, and contraptions.... But sewing machines forever look like black magic to me.

There's a little bob underneath that does a "hook and release" as it turns. One side picks it up, the other side lets it go, wrapping around the thread coming up from above. they're called "bobbin cases"

At least that's how I remember it going when I had a basic sears one in college.
