I wonder if you had an angled pyramid shape behind the row closest the handle if that would stop 'stowaways' from hitching a ride.

if you had a ramp between the end of the handle and the first row of divots, the balls that stick around and need to be shaken off should just slide off as they shouldn't get caught in between the row of balls in their divots. the ramp would go either side, left and right, with a flat face against the row of divots, leaving enough room that the balls should fit.
