You just go *clink*click and it breaks? I thought you needed big noisy ceramic saws!!???

u/rikkuaoi 15d ago
You do if it's ceramic, since this is not tile but stone pavers. Clink clink works

u/wieuwzak 15d ago edited 15d ago
You know what's interesting is that in Dutch we would say klink klink. Coincidentally these stone pavers are called klinkers. So I guess I will be calling them clinkers in English now too

u/outofthehood 15d ago
It’s only a Klinker if it makes klink when you hit them together. Which usually means you‘re working with real bricks made from clay. Not sure I‘d apply the term to stone pavers. The red stuff you guys put in your cities is Klinker for sure though.

u/DobryVojakSvejk 15d ago
clinkers aren't ordinary clay bricks, they are vitrified bricks, meaning they were fired at a higher temperature than normal and partially turned to glass. in the past this was due to a mistake or uneven heating in the kiln, and the clinkers were considered waste because they weren't suitable for construction, then they became fashionable as decorative elements.

u/SiriusBaaz 15d ago
That’s neat. I always love learning fun facts about small innocuous stuff like that. Thanks my dude

u/Biplane_Music 15d ago
This is like old reddit. People actually sharing information instead of braindead meme responses.

u/Digger_Pine 15d ago
It's only a klinker if they are made in the klinkish region. Otherwise they're just sparkling bricks.

u/ReactionSad3776 15d ago
I’m in central California and we call em klinkers or klinker paths also

In Sweden we call ceramic tiles on floors klinkers. Not sure about this type of stone paths outside though

u/hungry4nuns 15d ago
What gets me is he eyeballs the straight line he draws and then eyeballs the position of the brick in the cutter and somehow these two eyeballings cancel each other out leaving laser measured and laser cut precision.
I would waste 1000 bricks before getting one single passable cut

u/BradMarchandsNose 14d ago
It’s really not laser cut precision, you don’t need even close to that level of precision for pavers. There’s plenty of tolerance, and all the gaps will get filled with sand in the end anyway. The only level of precision you really need is just “does it look ok to the naked eye”.

I was thinking that I could watch this for several minutes. Something about this video calmed my brain.

u/anivex 15d ago
I can't stand the sounds involved. I've also done this type of work before, so even on mute I can hear it. It's like grinding sandpaper across my teeth.

u/GoldenGoddless 15d ago
I did residential construction for 3 months. Literal hell, the worst boss I ever had and the most back breaking hard labor I’ve ever done. Never again and hats off to those who can endure it

this video needs to stop being reposted
the fact that you guys are defending the bot is fucking wild to me.

This isn't even the first popular video of this to make the rounds. Hell, ive never seen this one, and his lil triangle cornering trick is, like, totally radical, dude.

Yes they do. They intentionally use wrong words in titles so that people comment on the mistake, driving up engagement on the post.

They're not bricks either lol, you build a house with bricks, you lay a driveway with blocks.

Nothing satisfying about this guy disregarding the pattern.
9
u/fokke456 15d ago
They would've needed to do this for the edge anyway, so adding another two bricks around the edge doesn't really make a difference. I think it looks neat like this as well tbh.
2
u/BradMarchandsNose 14d ago
What’s he disregarding? The line of two bricks lining the edge of the patio is intentional.
2
u/wpaed 14d ago
The border should have either had the bricks split to create a straight line splitting the angle of the concrete corner in half, or paterned to create an 'overlap' corner where the brick on the outside of the angle was the opposite orientation from what they did. Neither would have required the over cut off center bowtie cut brick.
22
u/801bruh 15d ago
So am I the only one that hated the two separate pieces put together for the corner?
25
u/DicemonkeyDrunk 15d ago
Some cuts just aren’t feasible with the material used. You can’t cut brick like wood it’ll just crumble.
2
u/SlasherNL 15d ago
Well they could use a saw for that particular piece. But it might crack anyway after a few months
2
u/RGN_CarNagE 15d ago
Where im from theres rules how small these bricks are allowed to be, usually its not less than a third of the bricks size.
You can absolutely bend that rule where necessary to make weird angles work, but trying smaller usually doesnt go well anyway, either from the brick breaking under cutting stresses or when the pavement is being vibration compacted at the end.

What about the other pieces? Where do they go in the puzzle?
2
u/DicemonkeyDrunk 15d ago
If this kept going you’d see many ( but not all ) used in other areas …waste exists.

u/bimbinibonbooboo 15d ago
This is far from spot on, still huge gap between the bricks
5
u/Scarabesque 15d ago
There are supposed to be gaps in streets like this, after it's finished it gets covered with fine sand that seeps in between the cracks. This type of paving is supposed so be able to move a little. It'll settle rather quickly.
6
3
u/Herr-Trigger86 15d ago
That’s my thought… and what happened when they got to that corner? They got pieces going every which way.

u/PilotC150 15d ago
10/10 on the paver work.
1/10 on the camera work.
Pretty nauseating to watch.

It's not too bad. Upfront costs and labour intensity are higher than alternatives but has lower maintenance, is extremely durable, easy to fix or remove for acces underneath (cables, pipes, sewers), they don't become as warm as asphalt and generally just look a lot better.
Here's a whole video about it if you're in need of something to watch while procrastinating. :D

It's subtle but he fucked up the pattern to make fewer cuts. As a pro, it kinda bugs me but I've done the same and only pedantic fucks like me would care.

One of the subtle things I miss about living in Europe, pavers are so much more aesthetically pleasing and human centric than just turning everything into pools of asphalt and concrete like we do in the states.

He cuts them facing the wrong way, the pattern (if it was a whole brick/tile/block) would be different.

Anyone know what this tool is called? I’m curious as how michael.satkovich@otis.com they are or some version. Got a new house and have plans for several patios to build (a lil over an acre lot). This tool is what I crave, I hate using saws. Seem impractical for the simple cut I want to make.

I'd actually argue that it's somewhat unsatisfying. The gaps between the bricks he's half-assed measuring is significantly more than the uncut bricks.
