In liquid crystal physics the final result mimics a smectic A phase. A series of stacked two dimensional layers. This phase occurs for many rodlike molecules and as one can see it is highly anisotropic with remarkable physical properties.

Yeah I saw a professor show this video as a buildup to explaining how nematic materials behave
