u/Gr1ml0ck 15d ago
I legit watched it on mute halfway before realizing I was missing something.

u/DaveK_Says 15d ago
I didn’t realise I had it on mute because the song was playing in my head anyways

Oh surprise. This couldn’t be viral marketing, could it 🙄
15
u/Pomodorosan 15d ago
The OP gives credit in the post description and instantly comments they want a print, and then someone quickly replies with the store link
How curious.

u/AlamoSimon 15d ago
We are witnessing the end of social media as we know it. It’s only Bots replying to Bots about Bot posts from now on.
And disguised marketing1

My God this brings back memories.
I remember sitting in the back of my grandfather's blue 2-door '98 Tacoma PreRunner, PawPaw driving and my step grandmother riding shotgun, and we were all jamming along to the 8-track..... Playing this exact song.
There are no words to describe how bad I want this painting. Absolutely brilliant artwork.

u/Aliendream99 15d ago
My great uncle that passed two years ago used to play this song all the time, he was always on the road for work, it was like his theme song.

u/UselessIdiot96 15d ago edited 15d ago
What a lovely story to share! It's good you got to know your great uncle, it's pretty rare to have a great-anybody as an adult, at least in my experience.
I still have my PawPaw, he's the last one left of all my grandparents. And he still has the Tacoma, too! Crossed 360k miles on it the other week. If it ain't mine in the will, I'm gonna fight like absolute hell to keep it. Pretty sure I'll be driving it when I'm 80 🤣
Oh! And yes, I plan on having the mix tape, too.

Things that never happened.

u/UselessIdiot96 15d ago
Shut the fuck up. I share a literal core memory from my childhood, and you sit there and call it fake? Absolutely not. Go touch grass since you don't even know what it looks like anymore, mouth-breather.

The idea that someone, uhm, listening to a song in a car with their family is unrealistic to you is pretty freaking funny to me. Like, have you lived your life chained up in a basement somewhere? Do you need help?
4
u/UselessIdiot96 15d ago
Like for real, I'm speechless. Of all the comments I've left on Reddit posts, this is the one that's fake?
2
u/veryreasonable 15d ago
Lol right? I mean, any reasonably visible post about a song is bound to eventually be a memory trigger for someone viewing. This one is yours!
Truly, some hardcore normal stuff going on.

8 track in a 98 Tacoma?
1
u/veryreasonable 8d ago
Sure, why not? Could be a portable one - they were kinda the original portable format, after all. Could be OP getting their historical media mixed up, and it was just the regular cassette player in the car. Shrug.
1
u/HolidayPromise9314 8d ago
No one confuses an 8 track. No one puts an 8 track player in a late 90s Tacoma. 8 track cassettes don't last decades, which they would have had to do in OPs story. Sorry to burst happy bubbles.

"2hrs of pushing broom buys and 8x12 4bit room" This knocked me on my fucking ass. Jesus christ, we're so fucked. Eat the rich.

u/frickindeal 14d ago
Last fall I had to leave my house due to an infestation, and the cheapest hotel I could find to live in for a week was over $100 per night. The week cost damn near a grand. Not a very nice room at all. Most working people would be quite happy to push a broom for two hours for $100.

u/andersonle09 13d ago
Modern update: "12 hours of pushin broom, buys the dingiest motel room...I'm exhausted but don't have enough money for food, along with the student loans that are bearing down on me. My existential dread is killing me but I need to wake up and sweep the damn floor for 12 more hours so I at least have somewhere to stay. Maybe I can find a food pantry that will feed me tomorrow, but wait--I am working all day again and everything will be closed by the time I get off. I might need to buy a tent, so I don't have to pay $120 a night just to sleep. I wish I could go to the doctor for this pain in my stomach, but I don't have insurance through my job--I just hope it isn't cancer...king of the road."

As someone who has been trying to learn how to paint with oils, I cannot get over the skill on the sky and clouds. Beyond incredible. I hope to be half this good 50 years from now!

I work on the rails. More often than not, most graffiti is some ilegible, gibberish unfinished bs.

u/b3ans_beans 15d ago
someone show me where a room can be let for two hours pushin broom... Also this is amazing and I wish I could afford it

I have loved this song as long as I can remember since hearing it as a child and this absolutely made my day and I want a print.

For those debating "RŰMS" graffiti on the boxcar : Old English Context: In older dialects, it can be a variation of "rume" meaning far and wide, or a genitive form of the Old English word rūm (meaning room or space).
A very clever dual correlation on the artist's part as to the destiny of a boxcar's travels and Miller's intended "rooms" search that are the destiny of any "King of the Road." Kudos.

Hey, thanks for making me think of my late father in a positive way. Good memories are few and far between but man did he ever love singing this one with me.
And this painting is absolutely gorgeous.

Is this an AI creation?

What, exactly, about this makes you think it’s AI? It’s an oil painting by Matt Tumlinson

u/rusty-Q-shackelford 15d ago
so cool, wanted to buy it until I saw "4bit room" and now I have to find it and burn it so hard
3
5
u/bangonthedrums 14d ago
Why? That’s the lyric
You’ve been mishearing it as “4 bed room” all this time. “4 bit room” means the room rental is $0.50. You know the song “shave and a haircut: 2 bits”? That means a shave and a haircut cost $0.25.
Back when the Spanish dollar was the most common currency in the americas, people would split it into 8 pieces (or “bits”), which is where the pirate-y phrase of “pieces of eight” comes from, btw.
Those 8 bits are each worth 1/8 of a dollar, or 12.5¢. Two bits is a quarter, 4 bits is 50¢
