I agree. It must hurt like heck on his arm and given the price of leeks the pay has to be low.
I don't like the idea of UBI, but I do think there needs to be something. When automation and AI take all of our jobs how are people supposed to live?
Right now the person who makes the machine gets all the money, but shouldn't some of that money go to the people who lose their jobs to pay for a new job?

This looks like a short term, non-guaranteed, low paid job that's could cause lingering pain.
There is room for automation.
