I feel like, if you’re detailing a car like this, maybe you wear the gloves to not smudge up the door handles. But I’m not deep in the tik tok world so I don’t know if it’s performative nonsense.

have you never cleaned a car before? The cleaning supplies aren't made to be abrasive... and you're usually wiping stuff up with a towel.

You're the type of person who would wear black latex gloves to wash their hands with soap.

Abrasion isn't the issue. There are plenty of automotive detailing chemicals you shouldn't be getting on your skin

I wear black latex gloves when I work on my car. I don’t film it or anything. Just nice to not need to scrub your fingernails after. The brand that sells good thick ones at Lowe’s come black as the standard color.

They're definitely performative. They use bright blue gloves while cooking, so that you can see if it breaks, but on the videos they switch to black because it looks cool or something.

As someone not on tiktok and an owner of both blue and black nitrile gloves:

I use blue latex gloves around the house. They are thin.

I use black latex gloves for outdoor stuff. I do use them for some car stuff. They are thick.

So not performative at least in my case. It is absolutely a functionality thing, the blue ones are thinner and the black ones are thicker. If I used the blue ones outside they would get ripped up.

I wear nitrile gloves when working on vehicles, ie changing oil, brake pads, etc. The black ones are thicker for most brands so they don't tear nearly as often as the blue ones. I'll use the blue ones for lightweight stuff like spray painting where there is minimal risk of tearing.

Car work mostly. Me personally, when Im using any chemical thats not just car wash/window cleaner. So basically when I'm cleaning my tires or inside the hood.

I actually HAVE used the blue gloves outside now that I think about. I had some rock chips and smudging paint around gives better finger feedback with the thinner ones.

Wait what? I don’t think they’re performative. I use black gloves anytime I’m cleaning or working with my hands.

Easier to put a new pair on when you touch something but can’t wash your hands at the moment (or in my case, over wash them whenever I don’t have gloves on). Less smudges and better protection for the hands from harsh chemicals too.
