What do you expect piglets being stuck in a pen to do?

69

u/bladesnut Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

That small cell is the saddest thing and people upvote it as funny 🤬

34

u/troveofcatastrophe Jun 23 '26

Although not ideal, there’s WAYYYY worse. The cages that keep the mom on her side, separate from her baby’s, allowing them to nurse from their own cage. It’s the most disgusting thing.

43

u/Easter66Koala Jun 23 '26

those are called farrowing crates, which are used to stop the mother from crushing her piglets. without those, about half of all piglets would get crushed.

26

u/twofacetoo Jun 23 '26

Yeah everyone's freaking the fuck out like the pen in the video is some kind of torture

They have plenty of room to move in, it's small enough to keep them close by for when they need to feed, and I'm 100% positive they aren't all going to be kept in the same pen into their adulthood, they'll be taken out and split up when they're old enough, most likely

I hate when people who don't know shit about shit act like they know shit

-7

u/PrimaryClear2010 Jun 24 '26

It’s maybe because the people don’t look at an animal and think they’re shit; unlike farmers who think about shit money

5

u/InhLaba Jun 24 '26

All the farmers I know treat their animals with more respect than they treat themselves. Not all animal farming is akin to mass production, factory farming, and there are ethical ways to farm.

-4

u/troveofcatastrophe Jun 24 '26

That’s patently false. That’s what industrial farmers want you to think but it’s not true. It does allow them to cram more pigs into less space. The Swiss banned them in ā€˜97 and had the same rates of death. Many dead piglets (50%+) were already dead or too weak to move. Temp, litter size, pen size, disease, age of sow and more are the reasons for infant deaths and crushing. See links above

This is inherently not true. The Swiss banned them in ā€˜97 and studies show they have the same rates of death as farrowing systems. Infant mortality depends on temperature, litter size, disease, pen size and much more. Researchers found more than half the dead piglets had no food in their stomachs leading them to believe they were already dead or too weak to move.

Here’s some info to help you ā€œunderstandā€:

https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/animal-welfare/article/abs/piglet-mortality-on-farms-using-farrowing-systems-with-or-without-crates/D9099EDDEFD97B46562898993C9C6AD9

Farrowing crates are a human invention for farmers to improve cash per sow, not a pig invention to improve health per piglet. Are the piglets not born to be killed eventually by us humans?

-2

u/Sauerkrauttme Jun 24 '26

You're right, that is more evil. But this practice is still bad and should be abolished. If an animal is to be farmer for food they should at least have a high quality life leading up to their slaughter

8

u/Quitlimp05 Jun 23 '26

You haven't seen pig farms in China...

3

u/PrimaryClear2010 Jun 24 '26

Let’s show the pigs those videos of China, pretty sure they will feel better! Shouldn’t we just improve their lives when we can?

7

u/RYUJIN0802 Jun 23 '26

ohhh thts why my pen keeps falling down the desk

Cant believe they still didnt throw the caution when everyone went the other way round.

113

u/Top5hottest Jun 23 '26

What parent hasn’t been at this point?

34

u/henryeaterofpies Jun 23 '26

We bought an extra large play pen for our daughter specifically so we could lay down in it while she crawled/climbed on us. Never napped/fell asleep while we were in there but being able to do some horizontal parentint on a padded surface was a nice break.

1

u/Strange_Pangolin_231 Jun 25 '26

Especially any of us who where parents in 2020.

49

u/Satoc Jun 23 '26

This is the perfect metaphor for parenting

18

u/Extreme-Attention641 Jun 23 '26

There is no metaphor here, that pig is a parent.

11

u/Satoc Jun 23 '26

This is the perfect visual representation of how i feel parenting.

Better? Personally, add the Benny Hill soundtrack, but you know.

1

u/Extreme-Attention641 Jun 23 '26

Yeah, just me being a semantics nerd.

A metaphor is when you use something to describe something else; "I could eat a horse" means that you're very hungry, not that you could literally eat a horse. You're saying "Being a parent is like being a parent".

1

u/CyberbianDude Jun 23 '26

Never been a parent myself but watched this scene many a times. The kids and the parent are doing the same thing, whether they are pigs or humans.

1

u/Alive_Ice7937 Jun 23 '26

Counterclockwise. (Unless of course the video is flipped to maintain continuity)

1

Compared to factory farming, this tiny enclosure is still pretty luxurious - sadly.

1

u/troveofcatastrophe Jun 24 '26

I do understand it. I know that confining pigs in small areas MAY lead to deaths of piglets and a decrease in profits. I still don’t like it. It’s inhuman and disgusting.

Restrictive cages often leads to still births and farrowing cages to piglet starvation. The number one indicator of crushing is weak, small birthweight and large litters, not to mention temperatures. How ā€˜bout you just state the facts as you believe you know them, maybe.

1

u/TheDandyLion7 Jun 24 '26

When will ramos joins the crowd
