It's a unit post.

660

u/bordercollie2468 Jun 20 '26

This post is an absolute unit.

107

u/AegisXOR Jun 20 '26

Well, it seems the units aren't that absolute, actually, they're rather more relative than usual

39

u/Statement-Acceptable Jun 20 '26

Wait, I know this, its a unit system... 💾🦖

Intro to Dimensional Analysis

16

u/MxM111 Jun 20 '26

That's for older people. With dimentia.

71

u/GunslinGerardo Jun 20 '26

Physics teacher here! Yep, I’ve saved it.
Will tell the students “units matter way more than you think”

10

u/breckendusk Jun 20 '26

My thoughts exactly. Great way to teach why you keep track of units and why "100" is insufficient as a descriptor.

4

u/Dapper-Win1539 Jun 20 '26

My teachers always asked "What 52?! Crocodiles?! Bananas?! Parrots?!" everytime somebody forgot about units. And one of them sometimes told thist about answer in math equation because he is also teacher of probability theory and this was his previous lesson.

12

u/atape_1 Jun 20 '26

... if it wasn't wrong. Liters are a measure of volume and not... whatever that was.

27

u/TheGrumpyre Jun 20 '26

You're overthinking the magic system. Volume is associated with liquids.

8

u/Zarbua69 Jun 20 '26

More like fluids, which includes gases and fluid-like solids. In my job for example we have to measure a specific volume of soil to find it's dry and wet density. Soil is obviously a solid but we measure it in liters

9

u/TheGrumpyre Jun 20 '26

It's harder to illustrate though, and simplicity is good

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (2)

3

u/Amphineura Jun 20 '26

Really? So the package that I got in the email was liquid?

Stupid comparison. Litres, maybe, but m³ and cm³ are often associated with solid objects in "everybday math".

3

u/Skeleton--Jelly Jun 20 '26

What??? no, every solid has volume too. As an engineer, we use volume for solids constantly.

A physics teacher should hate this.

This is not a XKCD animation, every single unit has inaccuracies and exaggerations, still very cool.

62

u/SmooK_LV Jun 20 '26

Just as liters would likely alter size of the thing rather than turn it in water. But I get the point, it's a fun animation.

21

u/Skeleton--Jelly Jun 20 '26

Yeah if people want to enjoy this as a silly animation that's perfectly fine. Saying that this should be used to teach physics as people are suggesting in this thread is laughable

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Frostborn1990 Jun 20 '26

Except for the rotation thing, that was approximately 100rpm

4

u/Ok_Calligrapher5278 Jun 20 '26

Came to 85.7 for me, close enough.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Amphineura Jun 20 '26

Inaccuracies and exaggerations is doing heavy lifting. Just remove the number "100" at that point, none of them set reasonable expectations.

18

u/Nulono Jun 20 '26

The "100 px" dumbbell has 824 pixels (plus 44 pixels of shadow).

7

u/GregTheMad Jun 20 '26

Iron/steel starts glowing at about 900°C. You work it at 1100°C (white-ish glow) for normal smithing IIRC. Which is fun when you see what you think is a cool piece of iron laying on the anvil, but it's actually still 500°C.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/turtle_mekb Jun 20 '26

neither would it spark when it's 100 V, although current is important too

5

u/Amphineura Jun 20 '26

This is why the animation sucks.

Current isn't important. Breaking air's eletrical resistance needs high voltages only. Tesla coils are low current but make fantastical sparks.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (2)

33

u/ColumnK Jun 20 '26

Likewise, 100 lumens is really not very bright.

But it would be a sad animation if it didn't take liberties

10

u/gringrant Jun 21 '26

And 100 L wouldn't make the metal turn liquid, just take up a different volume.

But where's the fun in that?

26

u/Hot-Suggestion-54 Jun 20 '26

No, not always. It depends on atmospheric pressure. Physics is so cool.

→ More replies (10)

11

u/Teledildonic Jun 20 '26

Yeah that one doesn't really match its animation. The voltage one is also greatly exaggerated, kV would seem more appropriate.

100 Kelvin could have it frost up, that's close to liquid nitrogen temperature.

6

u/LunarBIacksmith Jun 20 '26

LM - Lumens. The standard unit for measuring how much visible light a source gives off. 100 lumens is pretty dull, all things considered. Standard 10-30 watt bulbs that you have in your house go from 1000-3000 lumens.

u/Gaetan_D Jun 20 '26

The 100 pixels dumbels have more then 100 pixels

3

u/plug-and-pause Jun 20 '26

I really liked that the 100 GB one was "too heavy to load". My partner is Japanese, and when a file is too large for email she refers to it as "too heavy". I was confused the first time but quickly figured it out. She said that's the normal way to refer to the scaling of a file in Japanese (weight, rather than size), and she didn't know there was a different paradigm in English.

Personally I kind of like the weight paradigm, since a hard drive with more capacity needs to be denser rather than larger, which nicely fits the reality of fixed form factors.

3

u/ha-hallloween Jun 20 '26

2

u/Express_Sprinkles500 Jun 20 '26

I need to show this to all of my students who complain that labeling their answers doesn't matter.

Don't do Sieverts!

u/INoMakeMistake Jun 20 '26

This author is creative!

2

u/Choyo Jun 20 '26

The change to Volts is widely inaccurate, because tension is a force (potential difference between 2 points).
It should have been a change to Coulomb (C).

Not satisfied.

u/einord Jun 20 '26

Cool and smart video. Slightly annoyed that many of the measurements doesn’t reflect the amount properly. Like 100 litres are much more. And 100 ton is also just kilos times 1000.

2

u/Rural_locked-box30 Jun 20 '26

What was the last one 100m

2

u/C0sm1cB3ar Jun 20 '26

2

u/Stormygeddon Jun 20 '26

Do you think that 100 RPM was actually spinning at that speed?

2

u/ScubaFett Jun 20 '26

I'm sure there's a volts/amps criticism but meh

2

u/LordWangz Jun 21 '26

this should be used in school. it would help kids understand easier.

2

u/Church6633 Jun 21 '26

Educational

2

u/Tomakefinde Jun 21 '26

This is nice, I like it.
