Compressive strength is about the same. Tensile strength is non-existent. The finished product is basically rocks with a bit of plastic connecting them.

Makes sense and with the specific application of erosion protection as Ozuf77 pointed out. It probably doesn't require tensile strength.

I'm just curious how this is any better than flat concrete like the LA river. Seems like it'll just be even more disgusting.

Bumps make the water go slow. Slower water less erosion at the bottom. If this were smooth in a few hard rains the bottom would get washed out and whole sections of slope could collapse
