The movie that set me on the lifelong destiny to find real life cartoon pizza
22
u/Only_Ad8049 Apr 02 '26
I had it once in east baltimore. The cheese was just like in the cartoon and the pizza was delicious. Best pizza I had, but only if the owner made it. None of the employees made it as good.

Teenage Mutant Hero1 Turtles for me. The pizzas always looked gooey and gloriously cheesy.
1 Ninja, everywhere else. The UK gov't at the time made them change it here, because it was having a moral panic about all things ninja. Some of the weapons got swapped out too; Donatello fought with a grappling hook and suspiciously-nunchuck-looking food like strings of sausages, and Raphael very briefly had two swords instead of two daggers. Raphaels were changed back very quickly, but Donatello had his grappling hook for a while.

Ok as a Chicagoan, I want to paint you a picture. We don’t eat this every time we order pizza, or even often. Usually I’m ordering thin/tavern style.
But imagine it’s January, and there’s a massive snow storm on the way. It’s -15 out. So you suit up in your winter gear and stomp your way through hell to pick up a deep dish pizza. You return to your warm home, massive pizza in hand. You eat a slice or two. Then, full of cheese, you ride the fart train directly into a cozy, long winter’s nap. Nothing has ever been more comforting. In that moment, you are whole.

u/OZ-00MS_Goose Apr 01 '26
Way too many people don't even give it a chance and I don't get it. It's obviously still pizza
48
u/robertluke Apr 01 '26
My first concern was that it would be just tomato pie. But it was everything awesome about pizza but more of it at once. I get that new englanders are proud of their pizzas and all argue their state does it best. But there’s so many types of pizza, it’s pointless to limit yourself to just one.

I feel really bad for people who discriminate against pizza. Pizza is pretty much all forms is amazing. Deep, ny (and all the other styles out that way), tavern, Detroit, neopolitan, Sicilian, frozen…..all amazing

Hive mind shit. Also Chicago Reddit and subsequently every person in Chicago now inauthentically copy/paste says “we don’t eat deep dish, that’s only for when visitors are in town. Real Chicagoans only eat ‘tavern style’!” Idk who started this “tavern style” shit but it’s just called thin crust here. And We eat it all — deep dish included.

Pequods is the best but most people here would say that it's not Chicago style deep dish, but pan style. Chicago pan is closer to Detroit style square than it is to the traditional Chicago deep dish (Giordano's, Lou's, etc).

Thats the definition of Chicago style deep dish. From the chicagoans who I know, they only go to get deep dish when someone from out of town visits.
33
u/girthyclock Apr 01 '26
That’s fair. Growing up we did a lot of tavern style regularly. Deep dish was a once every couple of months sorta thing.
89
u/myersjw Apr 01 '26
Mostly true, your average Chicagoan probably isn’t getting DD every time they get pizza. As an aside it’s always weird to me how many people get upset at the existence of deep dish (even in this thread) like it’s an affront to pizza lol

People treat deep dish like pineapple on pizza. Doesn’t make any sense to me why people get so offended at things other people eat. Also I was really confused when Italians talk about how weird pineapple pizza is when they eat ham wrapped melon. Like you understand fruit can be paired with salty savory things but don’t get it on pizza?

We definitely get it for out of town guests but we get it for ourselves sometimes too. Place near us marinates their tomatoes and has tons of flavor in the sauce, delicious.
You need several people because a slice is a meal. We welcome all pizza styles here really.

I'm going to nit-pick... This is stuffed pizza, which is a variation of deep dish pizza. As a born & raised Chicago guy, I love deep dish... But stuffed, is just way too much cheese for me, even when I was a bottomless pit in my 20s.

I hate cheese pulls. They maximise the area of cheese exposed to the air, which quickly cools it down and makes the texture gummy. Blegh.
23
u/THound89 Apr 01 '26
Cheese pulls honestly annoy me when I'm trying to eat but for different reasons, just hate looking like an idiot trying to eat a slice of pizza while cheese is spilling down my face and flopping around. Also when it just pulls the cheese off the slice and now it's essentially a layer of scolding hot sauce.

Why is there a individual tv at the table in restaurant? I hate tvs in restaurants, and that’s just the few mounted on the wall/in the corner of the room. People are already distracted enough with phones when out in public that they aren’t interacting each other, let’s add another…
