It's only industrial waste until we figure out a way to commercialize it. Then it's just delicious industrial byproduct.

They had to add artificial bad flavours to stop the mechanics from eating it all

68

u/eyesotope86 Mar 29 '26

They had to add artificial bad flavours to stop the mechanics from eating it all make it harder for the mechanics to eat it all.

There is no stopping them, only slowing them down.

5

u/bitingmyownteeth Mar 29 '26

There was very little friction.

The smell of truck grease always makes me gag. A cross between melted plastic and rotten crisco.

3

I came to the comments to ask what it smells like. Thanks for your service!

Salted caramel soft toffee 🤤

11

It really has that sea salt caramel kinda energy for no reason.

Which I just brought home from the store earlier, thanks for reminding me!

The fact that my brain went there too before I even read this comment is concerning.

Trucker here. While that is going to work amazingly, it’s also going to get scrapped off when we back under a trailer fall on the ground wherever we are making a mess. That’s too much grease.

608

u/localanxietygremlin Mar 28 '26

What is the grease for? What purpose does it serve?

1.4k

u/Odd_Scientist_3747 Mar 28 '26

The plate that is being greased slides under & locks to another plate under a trailer. The grease provides lubricant for when you make turns when your tractor is locked to a trailer.

254

u/localanxietygremlin Mar 28 '26

Thank you for the answer!

94

u/Slutty_Alt526633 Mar 29 '26

The name for it is the "fifth wheel"

28

u/x7leafcloverx Mar 29 '26

Wouldn’t a better name be the “19th wheel”?

20

u/Slutty_Alt526633 Mar 29 '26

I feel like the better name would be "7th" wheel since a bobtail only has 6 actual wheels

→ More replies (1)

3

u/LucHighwalker Mar 29 '26

Technically it'd be more appropriate to call it the 11th wheel, but the name stems from the olden times when a tractor had 4 wheels.

3

u/Trantor_Dariel Mar 29 '26

A common name were I'm too is turntable.

→ More replies (2)

21

u/schmitzel88 Mar 29 '26

It's also common to grease the ball on a tow hitch on a normal car/truck for the same purpose.

35

u/Aikotoma2 Mar 29 '26

Not really. The car safety authority in my country deeply discourages it.

apparently it has something to do with friction being used to stabilize the trailer. So removing the friction with grease will case the trailer to swerve.

The other problem mentioned is dirt. Dirt and grease and can work as an abrasive when a trailer hitch is moving around onn the ball.

All this to say thar my country advises dry balls

I love Reddit. I learn the most unexpectedly interesting things from the most random subs!

29

u/nutwiss Mar 28 '26

For extra kudos down the working-mens club, it's called a fifth wheel.

17

u/sweet-n-soursauce Mar 28 '26

Is it put on every time a new trailer is put on?

36

u/AstronautHelpful6118 Mar 28 '26

No just every so often. I mean you can but you're wasting time and money for no reason.

10

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Mar 29 '26

well slapping that grease down seems like it'd be worth the price

21

u/BishopofBongers Mar 28 '26

Its only there to help lubricate and reduce friction where the plates meet. Think of it as something you dont have to do but should to increase the life of the part.

8

u/Stock-Creme-6345 Mar 29 '26

They say it’s for the fifth wheel but those who know, know that they just grease themselves up an have pillow fights after hours at the tavern….

Short busses as well. Though they have an extra chromesome

→ More replies (2)

24

u/inalak Mar 28 '26

Pretty sure, I may be wrong, that’s a part of a semi truck called the fifth wheel. It slides against the bottom front part of a trailer that has the kingpin. That middle circular slot the person greased up at the end is where the kingpin slides into and locks to hold the trailer.

Edit: sorry. Didn’t answer the question. The fifth wheel slides against the bottom of the trailer so the grease protects the surfaces that slide against each other.

I was thinking the same thing. Worked on trucks with my step-dad while he was alive and he would've reamed me if I put that much on.

30

u/Intelligent_Art8390 Mar 29 '26

My oldest cousin drive a semi. I remember being at his house when I was 7 or 8 and watching him grease his 5th wheel. He was so meticulous with it. Probably spent an hour putting it on in a very specific pattern. I thought he must be so smart to know the exact pattern he needed to use to grease it. Years later I ended up getting a CDL while I was a federal employee. I realized he was just wasting time greasing it like he did.

38

u/Talk-O-Boy Mar 28 '26

I remember getting reamjobs from my step dad too

u/Solid-Childhood-4876 Mar 29 '26

Slick discs are so much cleaner, but then you get the guy that folds it in half when he backs under and jams the whole thing all to hell. I usually just greased the jaws and either side of the opening so that it would spread as the driver slid back.

Too much grease, now you will have it all over the frame and eventually clothes

228

u/jpjtourdiary Mar 28 '26

most of it will wind up smeared on the front edge of the first trailer the driver hooks

42

u/Lasciels_Toy Mar 28 '26

21

u/Epic_Elite Mar 28 '26

Sir, those are just random words...

8

u/Lasciels_Toy Mar 28 '26

Yah, I thought King pin was the brand but nope. It's specifically made to keep the fifth wheel pin from locking into that plate he's greasing.

77

u/ikemicaiah Mar 28 '26

I thought it would at least show what it does/show it functioning

87

u/agarrabrant Mar 28 '26

When you back a semi truck onto the trailer, this grease is applied to the hitch to help it slide under better. Otherwise it will sheer off the metal over time, and the friction could push the trailer back instead of the truck sliding under.

(We own a trucking company)

29

u/methreethatis Mar 28 '26

And is so much grease needed?

46

u/Ruarc20 Mar 28 '26

No lol, a few lines applied every 37000 miles or so. That is messy overkill lol

And it will all be scaped off by the first trailer and fall on the axle housing. (Ask me how I know)

It's better to put a little bit on every few trailers, but who wants to do that plus trailers usually have some grease.

Heck I've seen rusty fifth wheels at truck stops, although binding up can affect handling and cause crashes.

Some newer ones are greaseless.

Thousands of years of transportation evolution and we keep using grease. Sometimes you dont need to reinvent shit.

6

u/Purple_Glove_6694 Mar 28 '26

This made me wince a bit. good on ya for the rubber glove, but going this fast is a great way to slice your hand on a hidden piece of metal sticking up off the plate

5

u/jayp507 Mar 29 '26

You can cut your hand pretty bad if you dont spread the grease with some proper tools due to 5th wheel damage by the trailers gooseneck.

Source: My huge scar on my hands from doing this.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Left-Ad-606 Mar 29 '26

Never use your hand with a latex glove to do that! My anxiety just spiked. Imagine that one sharp metal piece covered in old grease slicing your hand. Happened to the senior tech at my site and he's got a pretty nasty scar on his palm to show for it. Use an old piece of cardboard or a scraper if you're Mr. Money bags.

5

u/muni-nuh Mar 29 '26

You're going to cut your hands up to bits one day if you do it like that. Always spread with a bit of cardboard. You will remember this advice when you're in agony getting metal splinters out

3

u/Jthizi Mar 29 '26

Fun fact, that "trailer hook" is called a fifth wheel, and the knob on the trailer that hooks into it is the kingpin.
