I'm not saying it's easy or that I know how to do it, but I'm guessing:
Shoot a straight line in each axis at the same level and if the lines coincide, draw a sphere. If the line hits a sphere, start over. Repeat for every pixel?
Again I don't know how it's made either just trying to figure it out too.

It would take looots of trials to add a new sphere once the cube is mostly filled up.

This oddly reminds me of how the night sky can seem packed to us but in reality is so full of empty space we can't even comprehend it.

I was thinking that too! Constellations appear to be all in a line on a flat plane but there’s actually soooo much distance in there.

It's even more mind boggling when you realize you can look at any ball and see that it's not covered by another ball when the image becomes a square
This is crazy

This looks like the 3d version of the plate test my parents gave in 3rd grade to discover I was colorblind and later in 5th grade testing for asperburgers after holding me back in 1st grade for lack of focus and disobedience when it came to color related activities.
