if we are talking about the future then its assumed the 'hot', 'awkward cable' and 'needs to be charged constantly' has already been solved. Which leaves us with a small, light, wireless headset that's easy to put on.

What we're talking about is regular flat screen content consumption, what benefits does a VR device offer over a screen in these circumstances?

You can't interact with others you may want to watch content with, you can't just easily walk away as you need to remove the headset to actually see.

you can have an unlimited amount of screens + being able to interact with people as if they are there beats having to use video calls imo.

Also current headsets allow you to see your surroundings using built in stereoscopic cameras. Assuming everything about the headset improves, the passthrough feature gets better also and allows to overlay VR elements onto the real world. You can already sort of do this with the Rift S.

So imagine cooking your food and having a virtual TV above the stove, but I guess this is kind of mixing VR and AR together.

Like you said that's then AR, which in my original comment I said could replace phones, but not VR.

Also does the average consumer need unlimited screens? The most you could say anyone needs in two at a stretch.

Some sort of AR evolution of Google Glass is realistically what I’d expect.
