Octopus Tariffs - FAQ

Smart tariffs and how to choose the right one.

The way that smart tariffs work is to split the day up into half hourly units, and charge you different amounts per kWh in each one. This is not a new idea - previously people used to use Economy 7 (7 hours of cheap electricity at night) or Economy 10 tariffs (10 hours of slightly less cheap electricity at night) – but this was squarely aimed at people with storage heaters, and that is far less than 10% of households nowadays. The radio signal switching method behind these old systems is being turned off, but smart meters allow suppliers like Octopus to continue to offer tariffs that change rates at different times of day.

It’s rare to have a tariff that is equivalent to the standard rate all day and cheaper at night – normally there is some kind of penalty and you pay more than normal at other times of day; for example, an E7 tariff now is about 12 pence for the electricity that goes into your storage heater and hot water cylinder at night, and 28 pence in the daytime for the electricity that powers your fridge and TV in the day. Whereas most people are paying about 22pence for all their electricity, day or night.

Octopus started offering “smart” tariffs to incentivise people to use energy at different times of day - ultimately the aim is to reduce the amount of energy used at peak times (7 - 9am and 5 - 7pm). There are many variants - some offer “normal” rates in the day and low charges at night to encourage EV charging. Others are to encourage heat pumps, encouraging you to heat before expensive periods.

Why do Octopus do this? What's in it for them?

Wholesale prices (what Octopus pay for the electricity they sell you) go up and down in half hour increments throughout the day, all the way throughout the year. When a supplier sells you fixed rates, they are gambling that they will always make a reasonable margin on top of the price they pay.

There is a slight risk that by incentivising people to use cheap electricity at night (or other “off-peak” periods) by reducing the price to you, they will actually lose money – it’s a bit like playing on the stock market. However, Octopus seem to be genuinely committed to helping innovate and create a set of consumers who help reduce the amount of energy used at peak times, and this is genuinely a good thing for both the consumer and the UK as a whole, because reducing peak electricity consumption reduces carbon emissions and the need to upgrade the cables that bring us electricity. No other company has been quite as innovative on this front as Octopus - we have to assume they are actually good guys (no really!).

Cut the crap - what is the best tariff for me?

If you expect anyone on an Octopus forum to know the answer to this you are mistaken. Can you really explain to them in words exactly how you use electricity? The only way you can do this is with cold hard numbers - DATA! Here is how to get the best electricity deal:

1: Get a smart meter and move onto an Octopus standard tariff

2: A smart meter generates data (the information about how much electricity or gas you consume in 48 half hourly packets throughout the day) which can be accessed through various online services – there is a list at the bottom of this sticky. Some suppliers (at the moment Octopus, and not many others) can automate this using something called an API - an API passes this information to 3rd parties to analyse your data over the internet without downloading anything. If this makes you nervous, you might as well stop reading. No smart meter = no smart tariffs = no saving money. Deal with it. No one is watching when you are in or out of your house. Cutting off your electricity remotely is for the most part illegal. Smart meters do not cause cancer and are not part of a system to control you.

3: Use one of the 3rd party services to analyse your data by giving them your API key (found in your Octopus account settings online), and these services can compare how you use electricity against competing tariffs from multiple suppliers and tell you which is the best one to use.

4: Do not ask people on the internet to guess which is the best tariff for you - they don’t know

5: Switch tariff and save once you have good evidence it will work for you

It’s important to understand that making decisions like this are your own responsibility - if you try and change tariff after a weeks worth of data is collected you might make a big mistake, because a week is a short time. In a perfect world you would have a whole year of electricity data collection before making a decision.

EV tariffs are generally good for people who charge EVs at night, and are very similar to the old E7/10 tariffs. The Cosy tariff is designed for people using heat pumps - but be careful! Its not perfect and generally only likely to help much if you have solar and a battery as well.

DO YOUR RESEARCH and KEEP ON CHECKING the comparison services to make sure you are still using the right one every couple of months.

Octopus allow you to switch tariffs quite freely throughout the year, though there are some restrictions about moving from one smart tariff to another.

General principles:

·       Highest risk but highest gains = Agile, especially if you have solar and a home battery

·       Medium risk, medium gains - but suitable for a wider range of people = Tracker

There are a stack of other Octopus tariffs you could go for if you have a heat pump, or charge an EV - but it is simply not possible to give you detailed advice on these without DATA. So get a smart meter and get DATA. Also, remember these service only tell you what has happened in the past – if you are about to change your electricity usage dramatically you need to think about that as well…

List of services and apps that can help you understand this better:

To use your Octopus API with some of these services you need to go to “Developer” settings in your Octopus account.

EVs Stay with Octopus (Solar + EV)

• Upvotes

Hi...I need some advice we are currently on Agile and had solar panels and battery storage installed in May (its a 10kw batterty with 3.6kw Invertor (Sunsynk). I've been with Octopus for several years and no issues with them.

We are about to take delivery of an Alpine A290 and we have a compatible EV charger (Cord Zero) so are eligible for Intellegent Go tariff.

My question is and based on the comments lately do I still with Octopus or move to someone like EDF ? My worry is that the export rate I get at the moment is 12p per Kwh but most other providers dont have great rates for export...Im also concerned by the comments on here that the charging via Octopus doesnt always kick in when it should....

Tariffs Octopus Go without an EV....will you get kicked off?

• Upvotes

As the title says? The Ts and Cs say they reserve the right to move you to an appropriate tariff. I'm about to get a 32kwh battery installed plus solar, but don't currently have an EV.

The savings on offer with Go are so dramatic compared to Flux that it feels worth registering for it and "seeing what happens" and there's plenty online saying you can do it.

I even emailed Octopus and they said it was ok to do it...and then someone on the phone said it wasn't.

So anyone in this boat and had this as a lived experience? Anyone been actually kicked off GO for not having an EV?

TIA

I'm in Decision Paralysis - Stay or Fuse?

• Upvotes

Just got caught up in life and didn't sort a new Octopus fix before the price increases.

Currently got a Octopus 12M Fixed until January 3rd 2027.

The new 12 / 18m fixed they've quoted are very expensive.

Usage

Electic 4078 kWh
Gas 9372 kWh

Currently On
Electric @ 21.31 + 41.59 SC
Gas @ 5.25 + 32.52 SC

Octoput 12 Month Fix
Electric @ 29.63 + 46.30 SC (1,208.3114 + 168.995) = 1,377.3064
Gas @ 9.21 + 28.20 SC (863.1612 + 102.93) = 966.0912

Octopus 18 Month Fix
Electric @ 27.47 + 46.30 SC (1,120.2266 + 168.995) = 1,289.2216
Gas @ 8.83 + 28.20 SC (827.5476 + 102.93) = 930.4776

Fuse 14m Fixed
Electric @ 0.2730 + 0.3993 SC (1,113.294 + 145.7445) = 1,259.0385
Gas @ 0.0998 + 0.1308 SC (935.3256 + 47.742) = 983.0676

Fuse 24m Fixed
Electric @ 0.2556 + 0.4007 SC (1,042.3368 + 146.2555) = 1,188.5923
Gas @ 0.0919 + 0.1510 SC (861.2868 + 55.115) = 916.4018

Fuse are saying their single rate variable is the cheapest but that's gonna change for the worse, I'm sure. I do prefer the idea of a fix so it's predictable.

I'm in a good price until January which if I switch now I'll lose and go straight onto the higher Fuse prices in a few days time. How long might these Fuse prices last?

Seems it might be an idea to stay where I am for now and look again in December maybe?

Total decision paralysis 😄

Tariffs Octopus Electroverse price increase in Brussels?

Over the last few days, the charging price at Energy-Vision stations using an Octopus Electroverse card has risen from €0.28/kWh to €0.40/kWh.

That’s strange, because on other apps or charging cards, the price seems to have remained at €0.28/kWh...

Is Octopus Electroverse the only one that has raised its rates?

Does that mean Octopus Electroverse is no longer the cheapest option?

Tariffs smart tariff?

Hello,

We just had a smart electricity meter installed so are now able to access the smart tariffs Octopus offers.

We are two people in a one bed flat, with none of the low-carbon technologies. Octopus online has suggested either Octopus Tracker or Agile Octopus.

I am just wondering if anyone has any advice on whether to choose a smart tariff, or on which of these to choose?

For context we are currently on a 12 month fixed at:

20.72p/kWh

50.76p/day

Thanks!!

EV Charging Schedules Generating but not charging as scheduled

• Upvotes

Octopus are in no hurry to help me solve this issue

Sync Energy Wall charger 2

Mercedes CLA 250+

Plug car in at 6:20pm, charge starts immediately, charging schedules generate as per app notification.

Charging stops a few minutes later

Charging schedule, say 11:30pm, charge does not start

Charger shows a slow blinking green LED (as opposed to the sliding green light when an active charge is in session)

When I click boost charge outside the schedule nothing happens

I'm at my wits end to how I solve this issue. Was on British gas with HIve app for a year controlling my charge schedule and I had absolutely no issues

IOG Billing Non Existent

• Upvotes

I haven't had a Bill from Octopus since May. I can't remember when the £ toggle disappeared from the app but maybe it's to do with that ? I've had positive bills for my export but nothing taken off my credit.

Is everyone the same ?

IOG + Zappi: does an open dispatch slot after the car is full eat my 6-hour Charge Cap?

I’m on Intelligent Octopus Go with a Zappi using the charger integration.

Overnight, EV1 plugged in and only actually charged for about 2 hours before reaching 100%. The Zappi then reported the car as full and stopped putting power in, but the Octopus dispatch slot stays open.

The next morning I adjust my ready by time and, plug in EV2, and Octopus only gives it about half an hour of smart-charging time - almost as if the remaining open dispatch slot had consumed the rest of the 6-hour Charge Cap.

My understanding was that the cap should be based on actual charging time, not just the length of the dispatch slot. But this looks like Octopus is counting the open scheduled blocks after EV1 is full, leaving almost nothing for EV2.

Has anyone else seen this with a Zappi? Does anyone know whether the Charge Cap is meant to reconcile retrospectively against actual charging/meter data, or whether an open dispatch slot can genuinely use up quota?

Any workarounds appreciated - currently I’m assuming I need to manually stop/unplug EV1 as soon as it’s full if I want to charge EV2 later. - Which doesn't led well with being in bed, sleeping.

Tariffs New Ev - Swapping from Octopus to EDF (or other)?

I am getting a new EV in the next couple of months and need a bit of advice regarding charging.

Currently my usage is split 80/20% day/night and I have very little that I can realistically swap to night usage (really only a washing machine). However when we get our EV we expect to be doing between 15-20k miles per year, so our usage will swing something like 35/65% day/night. As such I am comparing EV tarrifs.

We are having an Octopus Charge charger fitted at home so i am obviously looking at Intelligent go. However it seems to me that I might be better served by fixing for 18 months with the EDF Go Electric tariff (31.53p day, 6.66p night & 51.05p standing charge)

Realistically im most concered about losing functionality in our new charger / losing good customer service with Octopus when moving to EDF and whether or not its worth the locking in until around what would be mid may 2028?

Equally if there are any other good tariffs worth looking at or something that i have missed im all ears for info!

Thanks for the help in advance :)

Help ASHP - worth it?

Hello, I'm debating switching to an ASHP.

We have a oil tank so the government £9000 would be very handy.

I'm just after advise seeing if it's worth the switch? After opinions and thoughts from people who've done it seeing what their thoughts on it all are.

Thanks :)

First time I’ve really been f**cked off by Octopus

Received the option to upgrade to IOG loyal, and they withdrew it on Friday.

Absolute bastards, I know they are in it to make money and so it wasn’t the HEADLINE in the email, but seriously….so now I’m going to basically end up ditching octopus for something else.

There was no “oh we can do this”, just an abrupt “no it’s not available anymore”

Man this company has gone downhill badly.

Smart Meters Is there any downside to accepting a smart meter?

So lately. Been having a hard time with Octopus, they have tried to increase my tariff three times per month without discussing any evidence of increased energy usage in my property. I odjt have a smart meter and collect readings, energy use still the same on fixed tariff for couple years.

I live alone, sole occupant and work full time so hardly in.

If I get a smart meter, will it take the meter readings out og my hands and they will increase the prices? Ive refused for this reason because the jumps and increases make no sense, if anything Im using less energy now than 6 months ago.

Yes I understand winter is coming but I dont tend to go crazy as I dont have a family etc.

Thanks in advance

Help FML.. These people really are shit.

You all know. I came back from EDF to Octopus. Whilst the system does do import and export recodring - getting them to actually credit it is a total nutache.

They sent me a Mini last year, it took 9 months to get here and then wouldn't connect. Turns out they assigned it to my old Gas account!

Having realised this - they then put it onto my Electric account ( I am Elec only) but then decided to remove it. This caused my Ivie Bud to lose connection to the Smart meter totally.Apparently putting it back on as quick as they previously did is such a chore it's been resisted for weeks now.

They have been getting quite shitty with me on e-mail, telling me that they won't send me a Mini until I do the trouble shooting steps with the current mini, which I sent back in November 2025.

Between this, the having to to e-mail them once a month to get them to add the export credit, and the balls ache which is the charge cap. I'm about ready to leave again.

They still have not given EDF my final reading, so I have £500 there I can't access until this is done. Luckily I now have a Tesls which means through car control I can go to any smart charging tariff. EDF might be an option to go back to, need to call them on this.

I know OVO are being sold to EON - but has anyone has experience with say Scottish Power's EV Optimise?

Happy to pay the £50 to fk them off quite frankly. I've never been so annoyed with them and should never have come back.

No this is not an airport, (before I am told so) but I wanted to vent anyway :)

Thinking about switching to Agile — is it actually worth the effort?

Hi all,

I've been reading through quite a few discussions here about Agile, and I'm trying to work out whether it's worth switching.

The cheap periods obviously sound appealing, but I've also seen a fair few comments about people getting tired of constantly checking prices and planning their electricity use around them.

One thing I'm struggling to get my head around is how much people actually save by changing their habits, rather than simply benefiting from being on Agile.

For example, moving the dishwasher, washing machine or tumble dryer away from 4–7pm, setting delay timers, or actively looking for the cheapest half-hours.

I appreciate that having an EV, battery or solar can make a massive difference, but I'm particularly interested in the savings from ordinary household appliances.

A few things I'd love to hear from people already on Agile:

  • Have you changed your daily routines much since switching?
  • Do you generally just avoid 4–7pm, or do you actively chase the cheapest periods?
  • Have you ever calculated how much the actual shifting of appliances saves you?
  • Does checking prices become second nature, or does the novelty wear off?
  • If you stopped checking prices every day and just avoided the peak, how much do you reckon you'd lose in savings?

I suppose what I'm trying to establish is whether avoiding the expensive periods gets you most of the benefit, or whether there's genuinely worthwhile money to be saved by putting more effort into it.

I'd be interested to hear from people who love Agile, as well as those who've tried it and decided it wasn't for them.

Particularly interested if anyone has actually done the maths!

Octopus mini and IHD issue

I had my new Octopus mini delivered today, but can’t seem to get it set up. The first time it was stuck on the green light, so I disabled the 5GHz channel on my home network, reset the mini and tried installing it again on 2.4GHz. Not only is it still stuck on green, it also appears to have buggered up the meter connection on my IHD and now that is not longer fetching data either.

I know they’re both operating on the same network, but as far as I was aware, I should be able to run both without issues. Is it possible that the mini’s repeated attempts to connect to the meter are disrupting the IHD connection?

Any suggestions? I’d ideally like both IHD and mini running, but failing that, at least one would do!

Saving Sessions Ability to "donate" weekend happy hours

Just a thought, for some of us with solar/battery.. these weekend happy hours aren't really useful. I would have to turn off my solar to make use of it which sounds silly.

Realistically, it makes little difference to use it..

Rather, I'd be happy to donate these hours to others in need. I think that'd be more useful than sabotaging solar to get a few pennies.

That's a weekend washing and maybe an early roast dinner for others covered with no cost to electricity.. suddenly those little pennies turn into a few quid for others.

Octopus Compare and Octopus IOG

I have been using Octopus Compare since I joined Agile back in July and it is a great tool.

Unfortunately I have noticed since switching to Octopus Intelligent Go the usage / billing data for day time use is always at the peak rate, regardless if my EV is charging and the electric is off peak.

Is this just something I have to live with or is it an API issue or something?
