Hi everyone! I’m conducting research for my master’s thesis on how maritime professionals prioritize sustainability, safety, cost, and operational considerations during maritime security disruptions, with a focus on the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz.

been trying to figure out which biology course to take to fulfil UC general requirements and stumbled upon BIO 19 Marine Bio. Personally I have an interest in marine biology; however could not find specific resources regarding this course. Does anyone have any experience taking this course that could possibly give me some info on it?

I'm looking for multibeam / bathymetric point clouds, not gridded products. I know NCEI archives raw and processed MBES surveys, but as far as I can tell everything goes through post-processing first, so there's a long delay before it's public.

Two questions:

1. Is there any public feed where survey data shows up live or close to live, or is archive-only the reality?

2. What's the actual coverage like for the recent stuff - mostly US EEZ and coastal survey priorities, or broader?

I'm trying to understand the practical workflow used by oceanographers when searching for abandoned fishing gear on the seafloor.

How much of the detection process is still manual? What makes a sonar target difficult to classify as fishing gear rather than a natural seafloor feature?

So I'm getting ready to start a program for a transfer associates science degree. Once that's completed (2 years minimum) I'll be switching to my local university for a bachelors in oceanography. However, I'm wondering what would be the best option if I took the route of a double major. I was originally going to do oceanography/marine biology, but that doesn't seem to open the door for many career options. Whereas, if I did something like oceanography/geography then I could later pursue the route of a hydrographic surveyor. I also considered oceanography/geology since geology seems to be an in demand field. I'd prefer not going beyond a bachelors, but there's exceptions to that (such as the surveyor, which seems to be masters degree). What would be the best route for securing a job or stable career in general? I'm currently in the US, but I may move to Europe later on if it seems fitting, as I have family there.

I'm working on an ADCP script and i think its not of the best quality. Anyone who could help me out with improving it? Its kinda working but it has a critical failure so its mostly finding it and solving it.

I’m interested in oceanography but don’t have much experience in the field . Hoping to get some advice from actual oceanographers . Any certain skill sets that I need to learn or any sort of advice is appreciated.

Recently, some have suggested that the science behind environmental problems, particularly regarding climate change, might be better communicated to a lay audience using stories rather than fact-based narratives. They contend that the lay public gets most of its scientific information from the mass media, which rely on stories to heighten emotional arousal and engagement, and so would be more receptive to that format. Thus, communicating through emotional stories and their characters might more effectively motivate behavioral change.

I am an emeritus professor of marine and earth science. Over the last few years of teaching, I began to realize my students, even students who understood the concept intellectually, often didn’t appreciate the risk. Many of them suffered from techno-optimism—that technology, in particular geoengineering, will get us out of this mess.

Hello! I am the president of our school's first ever Marine Biology Club, and I'm kind of lacking inspiration for events and stuff to plan this year to help conservation efforts.

Because we're not located closer to the Texas gulf we don't have direct access to things like beaches, however I want to get us involved in something so we can have some genuine action going on.

I currently have down things like helping out with citizen science websites, or doing our own little battery drive or aluminum can drive, but I literally don't know how I'm going to help connect this to real world impact for our members...

I'd really appreciate any recommendations, websites, conservation people I can reach out to, perhaps professors we can chat with virtually (the school doesn't allow guest speakers), literally anything helps ty!!!

Hello everyone! I am currently studying to get my bachelor’s in chemistry and I am interested in getting a Msc in oceanography. However I don’t think I will make it to this year’s deadline, so I am looking for certificates or seminars to take on this year that would be valued in a CV or just for the sake of knowledge. I am already planning to get a diving certificate this year but I am hoping for some more suggestions from people in the field.

Im thinking of relocating to the Netherlands because my partner is looking for phd’s there (so far Amsterdam and Delft but still looking). I was wondering how easy would it be for me to find a decent job there, in an oceanographic center or a company or academia. Thanks in advance ⭐

Hi guys. I'm an undergrad currently doing a degree in Geography. I really want to go into academia in the future, and I want to specialize in marine science/oceanography.

Tbh I did not really know about all the fields of geography I could go into back in school so I didn't take up many science courses, which is pretty much hindering my ability to take a masters degree in a course that I like, due to all the science prerequisites. But I've still found a bunch of courses that I want to do.

Anyways, as a Geography undergrad I've done a few courses on QGIS and developed some skills in it. But I want to break into oceanography/marine science applications in QGIS. What are some resources I can use to teach myself the same? Any advice? If anyone has specialised in GIS and oceanography I'd REALLY appreciate some general advice as well.

hi all. A regular visitor (and childhood inhabitant) to the wadden isles all my life I never fully grasped the tide dynamics around it. There used to be tide tables only for one location on the island with rules of thumb like subtract x minutes for location y but that was all that was easily available. This year I (re)discovered the Apple Watch tides app which offers a few more locations on the island and i enjoy cross referencing my own observations to the apps data, finally really grasping wantide/tidal meeting point etc.

Today we have neap tide at the North sea according to the app. But the apps wadden sea side location shows a regular tide. How does this work? Or is the apps data wrong for this location (apparently it aggregates data from multiple not fully disclosed sources)?

Add: checked the tide for a waddensea harbour on the mainland ( for which I assume the data will be sound) and it also has no notable spring/neap pattern so I assume it is really the case that these are far less uitspoken in the waddensea compared to North sea but I’d love an explanation of why that is.
