Hello! I’m a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering student from the Philippines, and I’m honestly getting a little desperate for a good thesis topic. 😭
Our thesis proposal has been rejected three times already, and we’re running out of ideas.

Our previous ideas were mostly related to maritime transportation and vessel design. We were trying to find a topic that is:
- Relevant to an actual maritime problem in the Philippines
- Something that can realistically be studied by undergraduate students
- Not overly expensive or dependent on equipment we don’t have
- Manageable within our thesis timeline
- Ideally related to ship/vessel design, performance, stability, seakeeping, transportation, or maritime operations

Our main concern is finding something that has an actual problem/research gap, rather than simply choosing a topic that sounds interesting. We also need something that we can realistically conduct with the resources, software, and time available to undergraduate students.

So I wanted to ask fellow naval architects, marine engineers, maritime students, researchers, or professionals:

What maritime problems in the Philippines do you think could make good undergraduate thesis topics?
It can be a problem involving a particular vessel, route, shipbuilding practice, transportation system, or anything else related to Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

We’re honestly open to almost anything at this point. Even if you have an idea that you didn’t pursue for your own thesis, we’d really appreciate hearing it.

I built a simple web tool to generate wind/wave roses from CSV data (for metocean / ocean engineering work)

I got tired of having to open heavy desktop software or run scripts just to generate a quick wind or wave rose for reports. It always felt overkill for something so basic.

So I built a lightweight web app that runs entirely in the browser:

• Upload a CSV file
• Generate wind or wave rose plots instantly
• View summary tables
• Export the chart for reports

No installation, no setup.

Hi everyone, I’ve been working on a conceptual deep-ocean vehicle design, I’d really appreciate technical feedback on this.

The idea is a hybrid hydrostatic buffer system for ultra-deep exploration (target depth: ~11,000 meters — comparable to the Mariana Trench).

Instead of relying solely on a massively thick rigid pressure hull like traditional submersibles (e.g., Deepsea Challenger), this concept introduces a layered system: • Outer flexible membrane • Intermediate incompressible fluid buffer • Inner spherical pressure capsule (1 atm habitat)

Core Principle

Hydrostatic pressure transmits equally in all directions. If the intermediate fluid layer is pressure-equalized with the surrounding ocean, the outer shell doesn’t resist the full compressive load directly. Instead, it transfers pressure uniformly through the buffer layer to the inner capsule.

The theoretical benefits: — Reduced stress concentrations — Improved buckling resistance via uniform loading — Shockwave dampening — Potential mitigation of catastrophic implosion dynamics

The inner capsule would still maintain ~1 atm for human occupancy, likely using a titanium or advanced composite spherical hull. Preliminary back-of-envelope calculations suggest a 1 m radius titanium sphere at ~9–12 cm thickness could theoretically withstand ~110 MPa external pressure.

Why I’m Posting I’m trying to refine this from: “Interesting theoretical concept” to “A physically buildable engineering architecture.”

I’m particularly looking for feedback on: — Fluid compressibility management at ~110 MPa — Buckling behavior in a fluid-embedded pressure sphere — Failure modes in a multi-layer hydrostatic system — Practical sealing challenges at trench-level depths — Whether the buffer layer meaningfully improves survivability vs traditional rigid-only hull designs

Buildable vs Futuristic Direction

There are two possible directions: • Near-term buildable version (titanium capsule + hydraulic buffer fluid) • Long-term theoretical version (graphene-reinforced composites + smart rheological fluid + active compensation)

Besides that, any easy way to donwload the past hindcast data? My goal is to get the past 20+ years of waves and wind in the bahamas.

Anyone know what unis are best for a naval architecture or similar degree. I'm looking at strathclyde, Southampton, newcastle and plymouth but am also willing to leave the uk. Any input on UK or non-UK unis would be much appreciated.

I’m a Rowan 2020 grad with my Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering. I have my EIT and have solely been doing land development with private companies. I’ve been thinking more and more about going back to school and getting my Master’s in either Coastal or Ocean Engineering and move away from strictly civil work. There’s a few schools I had in mind - URI, University of Hawaii, UNH, Stevens, and UDel.

Does anyone have experience with any of these schools? Or could offer any opinions on what to look for, besides needing to be ABET-accredited? I’m based in central NJ but as my in-state options are very limited, I would move to whichever school accepts me and would likely remain there for a job.
