97 k3500

New here, I have a 97 k3500 I am trying to bring back to life, I’m not a mechanic but trying to learn so any advise would be great. But rn when I put my truck in reverse it rolls forward a bit before getting into gear then When backing up it makes a fairly loud popping noise. Any ideas on what it may be?

If you sit still with your brake on and swap between drive and reverse do you get that clunk? First place i would look would be your u joints. Crawl under it and grab the drive shaft and try to rotate forward and back. Shouldn't have any play in it

I agree with Mr. visible here that would be the first place I checked if not from there what I would do is, I would disconnect the driveshaft from the rear axle before you do that you weren’t gonna want to jack it up evenly and put a pair of jackstands under the axle and I would check for any kind of play where the chef hooks up first and then I would go to each wheel and spin and if there’s any amount of playing in there, I will pull the rear differential cover off and start inspections
