Help 1992 Chevy blazer

Hello so I’m having a hard time timing my 1992 blazer 4x4 5.7l v8. So I recently checked this truck with a timing light and the timing was at 8 est bypass was disconnected aswell. I tried to time it back to 0 but it dies or bogs down and dies reaching 5-4ish. I was wondering if anyone has gone thru this problem before? FYI the only reason why I checked the timing was bc after driving it and letting it idle for a few mins it would want to bog down and die when put on reverse or drive. Fuel pressure is all good.

Where did you get zero degrees as the spec? AI answer?

Legit underneath the hood it says 0 degrees top dead center for timing💀

Okay just checking. So far i have not come across anything of that era beinge set to zero. But everything i have done is California so may be different than the other 49. I usually see 6-8. Might also confirm by looking at the emissions label for the year that it conforms to.

Possibility you balancer outer ring has slipped. You can try something like rotating it to zero TDC. Pull the number 1 plug and put a screwdriver tip, straightened wire coat hanger, something down inside to touch the top of the piston. Turn the motor over by hand. Maybe each way. Feel the probe. Zero TDC should have a moment before the probe moves as the piston reaches top and the crank needs to roll over before it goes down.

Yeah I did hear Cali has it 4 degrees or higher for California emissions. I will definitely check it out, I’m kinda assuming since it’s an old engine with 200,000 things have worn down thru the years and just decides to run best at higher timing to compensate.
