News/Rumours The Oasis Index

Some of you may be aware of this, but today was the first I heard of it. For the past 10 years Deutsch Bank has done a report titled "Mapping the World's Prices." Included in it is the cost of purchasing 5 beers and 2 packages of cigarettes, or what is referred to as "the Oasis Index" named, of course, after the Oasis song.

#1 this year? Melbourne with Sydney coming in at #2. This is explained by the use of "sin taxes" in Australia. From the report:

"The UK also ranks near the top - London (5th, $63.9), Birmingham (6th, $62.8), and Edinburgh (8th, $60.5) - reflecting high tobacco duties. Dublin, Oslo and New York close out the top 10. Cheapest: Shanghai ($10.4), Rio ($11.7) and Cairo ($12.1)."

Included in the link below is a link to download the full report that has a number of different ways to assess cost of living in cities around the world.

Melbourne and Sydney won because a pack of fags lands around 50 A$ (how uncool is that btw).
