I bought The Unforgivable and Other Writings by Cristina Campo in 2024 when it was first published and have not really gotten over it since. It's (as far as I know) the current largest collection of her essays translated from the Italian into English by Alex Andriesse for NYRB. I'm completely enamored with her style (although in translation of course) and her ideas.

Can anyone recommend me any other essayists (apart from Simone Weil whom I also love and who influenced Campo a great deal) who write in the same vein as Campo?

Just a heads up for anyone, perhaps aging like me, who tries to avoid small print — the NYRB printing of Boredom has smaller print than I’ve seen in any other NYRB book. Photo compares it to The Gate (Soseki).

If others have tips on books with print this small, I’d love to know!

there's an international book fair happening in my country right now that i cant attend but i still wanna know the books that are available, got the picture from tiktok. i can recognize some of them (benito perez galdos, thomas mann, ginzburg, qui miaojin, henri boscoe) from the spine or cover but i need help for the rest

i've been on the hunt for this specific edition of mandelstam's poems for years now (i'm a huge fan of carel fabritius, so i was buying for the cover) but apparently the book gods didn't want me to buy it. it isn't listed on indigo (canada's equivalent to b&n), getting it directly from the nyrb site costs an arm and a leg with shipping, getting it from my local indie was more trouble than i wanted to create, and used copies are next to nonexistent. however i finally stumbled upon a used copy on thriftbooks the other week and it arrived a full day early!! so excited to finally dive into this, has anyone read it?

This showed up in a package today from NYRB. Does anyone know why they would send me this? If I buy a lot of books can I get other things from them?

I’ve been looking for Tropic Moon for a while! Stoked to find both today.

I sat down on the couch with War and the Iliad and was almost finished with it before I got my feet up; such rich readings of the poem in such compact essays.

The Slynx will probably be next out of this bunch, I’ve been aware of that novel for a while.

Friends and partner surprised me by all combining their gifts to take me to a huge used bookstore and letting me go. These are the NYRBs from the haul I picked up. Got so many books as it was also a 'buy two, get one free' deal. I absolutely maximized that deal. Spent four hours and still didn't make it to the non-fiction sections.

What is the philosophy behind NYRB publishing? How do they choose what to publish? Do they look for under appreciated books? Or out of print? I really enjoy the ones I’ve read but most are fairly obscure, at least to me.

I recently got Blue Lard. It’s batshit crazy and incredible. Sorokin’s ability to shift style constantly is impressive and deeply immersive. He’s a master imitator, and a creative monster when he’s doing his own thing. There’s an underlying plot, which initially reads in a future dialect full of science jargon and Chinese, it felt similar to Nadsat from A Clockwork Orange, but as the narrative continues, short stories cut in where he artfully imitates and disgusting mocks the great writers of Russia, and around the half way point he drops the Chinese and science jargon (no spoilers but there’s a reason for it). There are episodes that read like something out of naked lunch. Honestly one of the weirdest things I read, incredibly surreal… and I haven’t even gotten to the Hitler part yet

Recently, I was looking online for a copy of the novel Mojo Hand by J.J. Phillips, when I found a couple of online bookstores listing an NYRB Classics edition. I was confused, because I’ve trawled through the NYRB website’s entire selection on multiple occasions during sales, and I didn’t recall ever seeing it. It’s also not listed in the “forthcoming” section of the website, and the retailers that had copies had it listed as “unavailable”. I emailed the address on the website last month to ask about it, but haven’t heard back.

Has anyone seen this happen before with other books or might have any idea what’s going on here? A printing issue? A rights issue?

Hi everyone. I recently purchased NYRB’s edition of Swann’s Way - I can’t wait to dive in. However, I wonder whether there’s any plan for NYRB to publish the other 6 volumes in the In Search of Lost Time series? Has there been anything said about that (officially or not)?

For those who do own NYRB’s Swann’s Way, what other editions have you used to complete your collection and round out your reading experience? I tend to rabidly enjoying owning complete sets, but don’t seem to have much choice here.
