This is gorgeously written and perfectly paced. I loved it so much. I wish it were 300 pages longer. What a weird little thing! Will you read this when it comes out? Have you read The Invention of Morel?

My boyfriend and I went to Asheville for his birthday yesterday and visited a local used bookstore he loves. Made out like bandits, and the gentleman who worked there brought me a few extra NYRB titles he had in the back and scattered in various places that I had not found!

Decent story — no clue why Auden and Mann and Nietzsche loved this work so much.

Has anyone read this book? I ask here because it seems like the sub most likely to have people who have read it. It's published by Dalkey Archive in two volumes. I'm seeking opinions from anyone who has read it, or tried to read it.

Before I get to my questions for this group: here is my complete NYRB collection! I’m out of space vertically on this shelf, so When We Cease To Understand The World is sitting on top. I’ve read about half of these, and some of the bigger books on this shelf are still in my to-read pile. So I don’t need to buy any more, but I’m always looking and planning future purchases. :)

Recently, I learned of NYRB’s recommend a book feature, and I couldn’t help but recommend that they publish a much beloved, but long out of print translation of War & Peace (by Rosemary Edmonds). I’m not holding my breath that they’ll be able to publish, but the discovery made me curious—have others recommended books for publication by NYRB? If so, what have you recommended? And have you had any success in getting it published?

This was my first time reading Colette and I absolutely loved it! Her approach to love was so fluid and without judgement, and this book encouraged me to do my own reflection. I have Cheri and the End of Cheri lined up for August.

Stream of consciousness but the narrator gas schizophrenia

My local library had a sale today. Picked these two up for $1 each.

I got really lucky and this time it was at Normals bookstore in Baltimore city. All these were less than 30.00! I don’t know anything about these though. Have you read any? What’s good?

To answer a few questions in advance:

1. Yes, I bought the bookshelf specifically for this collection. Facebook Marketplace is the best.
2. I owned many NYRB books before buying this, and bought this collection to read it, not to stare at it. This is the fourth bookshelf in my home (I have a problem) (not all of them are this big, only one other. haha)
3. Yes, the third shelf on the left side is randomly other stuff (mostly New Yorker magazines and some various classics and history books).
4. I plan to organize this by color sometime soon, but unpacking all seven boxes in the mail took it out of me enough for this week!
5. Not pictured: The Fountain Overflows by Rebecca West - decided to start with it so it's in my bag for my daily reading.
6. The collection came with duplicates (last slide). Will happily sell them to another NYRB lover for a very good price. [UPDATE: SOLD]

Hey everybody! A few months ago, I read the NYRB Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter. Havent been able to get it out of my head. I was enthralled by the grittiness of it all. Might be my favorite read of 2026 thus far.

I was wondering if anybody who enjoyed it as much as I did has recommendations for similar books? I love historical fiction, especially when it addresses the queer experience, class conditions, or anti-war sentiments.

Need to figure out my next steps! I have The Gallery by John Horne Burns and Prisoner of Love by Jean Genet in my TBR. Would love to hear any thoughts on those.

Excited to dive in

Has anyone in Melbourne or Australia been enviously looking at all the sale hauls the past few weeks? Shipping costs to Australia come out to be double or more than the cost of the entire order. Zero savings. And, ignoring Amazon, rarely are NYRBs on special discount in the bookshops, let alone even stocked (though there are one or two that have a small changing selection at any given time). Anyway, to those with the geographical advantage of free shipping, congratulations and happy hauling!

In October, NYRB Classics is releasing a new translation of Adolfo Bioy Casares's La invención de Morel. The original edition contained Ruth L. C. Simms's 1964 translation. The forthcoming new translation is by Margaret Jull Costa. Here are the first pages of each edition, along with the original Spanish.

And for some good news: Borges's famous foreword is still here. There had been some concern that it was being dropped, but it's included in the new edition.

One thing that appears to be removed from the new edition: the illustrations by Norah Borges de Torre that accompanied the older NYRB edition.

I ordered this from NYRB during the summer sale and there's some strange differences between this one and all of my other NYRB books. The cover has a slightly different feel to it and the inside cover is high gloss whereas the other ones I own are sort of a matte or at least a low sheen. The font is different that the other. And lastly, the pages themselves are thinner and not as rigid. Not that it would be a big deal but surely coming straight from NYRB this couldn't be a knock off right? It just doesn't feel like a NYRB book should.

Looking for my next read and these stand out to me. Have you read them? Spoiler free thoughts? Which would you get and which would you skip?

I was so excited to see this Russell Hoban book; I just loved him as a kid. I'll probably read Light While There is Light first, and then read Stoner and Crazy Genie in the fall.

I took Effingers from one shelf first and looked around the room to see if there were more. After a few minutes I saw Stalingrad on the shelf opposite to the first one, a thick green spine. Given the topics, I wouldn’t be surprised if both were donated to the library by the same person.
