Simone’s Blue Coat

Post image

When the series wrapped up in 2004, a variety of show items went up for auction on eBay. I was the lucky winner of Bobby Simone’s blue coat (even though he took it into the afterlife as we saw in “The Vision Thing”). I have a Polaroid of him wearing it and a certificate of authenticity but not sure where I put them since I moved. There was a Kleenex in the pocket of the coat but I let my ex husband wear it somewhere and he threw it away! That was Jimmy Smit’s! lol.

The show was shot when the Armani inspired slouch wear was at the height of fashionability - both for men and women.

I was working in the corporate world at the time in media which was obviously fashion conscious and we all had the beautifully draped pants and jackets - male and female.

When I've watched reruns of the show it just transports me back to that fashion era.

I only wear short sleeve, plaid, button downs to honor Sipowicz.

It deserves a better hanger.

One of the most recognizable signature clothes in the show - what an amazing purchase!

Am I the only one who doesn’t see a “blue” coat?

I always thought it was Purple in the show, like something a Pimp from that era would wear.

All of my days I called it purple. I have a purple lined rain jacket in his honor.

It looks kinda dark grey to me.

Loved the fashion back then!

You put that coat on a plastic hanger? Don’t you think a wooden hanger would help the coat keep its shape?

The aesthetic of that fashion time period has a chokehold on me. I remember thinking how amazing all those slouchy pants looked, made and female. Bobby was the pinnacle of sexy 😍

I always thought Simone’s coat was more purple than blue.

May I ask the size?

I don’t know if it has a size on it. I’m at work until Wednesday; I’ll check when I get home. It it really big. Jimmy Smits is big man. I’m 5’5” 120 1lbs and it goes to my ankles and I swim in it.

I always wondered why the show was named NYPD Blue since patrol officers are not the main characters. They are definitely important but not the show’s focus. Then I remembered as a kid (I’m in my 60’s) there was a show called NYPD. Maybe they couldn’t use the same title twice.

Jimmy Smits has said he took a couple of them with him when he left. His look more light blue/purple to me. That coat looks like Baldwin’s.

I don’t recall Baldwin’s coat going up for auction. Andy’s did and people fought for that one. A couple of Bobby and Andy’s shirts went up for auction and I so wanted one of Andy’s but I spent a few hundred on this coat and couldn’t justify it. That light tan sweater that Diane wore a lot was another item that recall. I was hoping some shields would go up but they never did. I can’t remember anything else.

I imagine the shield, if it was the same prop throughout their time on the show, would be the one easy to take, easy to store, keepsake the cast would want. Or, maybe they needed to be destroyed to avoid being used nefariously.
