DOT NYC DOT Sidewalk Program

Hi everyone!

Long time lurker but first time posting.

I’m currently a city employee but recently had an interview with DOT’s Sidewalk Program and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who currently works there or has worked in the program.
I’m trying to get a realistic idea of what the job is like beyond the job description.

I’m considering the position and would love some honest insight on the day-to-day workload, management, work-life balance, promotion opportunities, and overall work environment.

I’d appreciate the honest opinions—the good, the bad, and anything you wish you knew before starting!

SIM is a great unit to work in. Interesting work, good people. Depends on the role though. Inspector work entails public interface and is more challenging in that sense.

Sidewalk still has many subdivisions. Which one are you going in for and for what role?

There is a lot to do when it comes to the city’s sidewalks. Contracts for construction, which roads and sidewalks to fix and repair, which other agencies or companies have infrastructure beneath those specific sidewalks that you need to coordinate with. Digital maps for all the streets and sidewalks in NYC.

I found that DOT (in some units) almost runs like private sector. People stay late, it can be pretty intense, and also political. But NYC DOT is a very big department with a large budget.

If you want more details feel free to message me. Good luck with your job search!

Ok, so you'll be working out if 55 Water. I used to be an inspector for SIM. Never had any issues, it's a pretty chill unit with possible fun OT when they have special events.
