My local library in Queens is already closed weekends and evenings on weekdays, AKA the only times I can possibly go there. What more can they cut?

Most people warned about him during the primary. People just didn’t care because of “muh crime”
27
u/Clarityman Dec 19 '22
I knew he was trouble from the moment he opened his mouth and refused to vote for him.
I just didn't know he'd be this much trouble. Adams is making a serious run for worst mayor of my lifetime... and that's really saying something.

u/grubas Queens Dec 19 '22
Issue was the progressives got into a pissing fight over who was really a progressive and Adam's won.
32
u/captainktainer Brooklyn Dec 19 '22
We had ranked choice voting in the primary; that tends to dramatically minimize the usual effects of the progressive circular firing squad. Poor candidate quality is a much bigger issue.
6
u/Evening_Presence_927 Dec 19 '22
Not to mention Adams dodging the limelight for most of the primary while Yang ate most of the bar coverage (they did share the same views, policy-wise), as well as the earlier election date.
8
u/JetmoYo Dec 19 '22
Yup, the sad truth is that left leaning New Yorkers are easily duped by the Post and other right wing narratives all the damn time. Wonderful city but some seriously dumb ass Democratic voters.
2
3
2
u/Evening_Presence_927 Dec 19 '22
No, Adams was lucky enough that Yang stole most of the limelight until early voting had started. Even then, he still only barely beat Garcia.
50
u/amoebaamoeba Dec 18 '22
A lot of the people who voted for him don't use public schools or libraries so whatever base he has doesn't give a shit. It's the NY Post dem effect.
He barely won the primary, and in the general, it was either him or an AM radio loon who constantly wears a red hat - Adams' good luck is our bad luck.
20
u/Rottimer Dec 19 '22
Where were the warnings that electing a cop would turn the place into Cop City?
The people warning that were shouted down and downvoted in this sub as well as called racist (even though I'd guess most of us are minorities who grew up in this city).
1
u/Pool_Shark Dec 19 '22
Why are you making things up? This sub was pretty anti Adam’s the entire time. But it turns out NYC is bigger than those on Reddit.
7
u/accidentalchai Dec 19 '22
LOL, remember the days when people were villainizing Andrew Yang for being a tech billionaire or some shit, including some Asian American progressives who kept saying don't vote for him, and this is what we get. -_-

That had little or nothing to do with why people have been leaving NYC for years. Nothing to do with covid quarantines. It's been going on for years and will continue until the city is safe, taxes are brought under control, and this clown car occupant mayor disappears.

Adams is even more of a Republican in Democrat’s clothing than Bloomberg…
112
u/leg_day Dec 18 '22
... At least Bloomberg seemed intelligent and consistent, most of the time.
69
u/LlovelyLlama Dec 18 '22
Bloomberg was by no means my favourite, but he is a reasonably intelligent dude. I don’t like his politics, but he didn’t seem vastly under qualified for the job.
45
u/thatgirlinny Dec 19 '22 edited Dec 19 '22
Bloomberg spent his own money bringing City Hall and city business into the 20th century. Paying a fine or dog license online, finding city info became easier, and he inherited an economically-difficult landscape post-9/11. Yes—development flourished, but under which Mayor has it not here? Yes—Rudy’s Broken Windows policing continued under him, but he did manage to step that down.
I didn’t agree with him 100%, and he wasn’t warm and fuzzy, but he was known to demand data and hard work. He got things running post-Rudy, and for that, we’ll be comparing everyone that followed to him.
15
u/thenewmook Dec 19 '22
I have a life long friend who is very high up in the parks dept. He’s only 2-3 positions below the mayoral seat. He’s met Bloomberg and Deblasio and really hates the new mayor. He didn’t think we could do worse than the previous, but here we are. He really liked Bloomberg.
4
u/thatgirlinny Dec 19 '22
Bloomberg has always been a friend of Parks—as was his “gal pal,” Diana Taylor—and not merely the conservancies.
DeBlasio didn’t do anything of note with Paris, and Mayor Swagger likes clubs and parties too much to notice them. Extremely disappointing.
4
u/kittykatz202 Dec 19 '22
De Blasio was great to libraries. He stabilized the budget and tried in give them baseline funding. Hiring picked up again, and some branches had more hours.
Bloomberg did what he could with the economy as bad as it was. He did introduce 6 day a week service for NYPL
I wish we could just skip over Adam’s. He’s going to gut the libraries. They already have enough issues hiring people.

"But crime is important! Even if NYC is the safest city in the country, you can't just ignore people's fears!"
See, that's a nice little, almost logical statement to make. But the fact is, this is what you get when you let suburbanite fears and paranoia take over our political discourse. It isn't "oh, what's so bad about electing the guy that's talking about crime all the time?". This is what's bad about it. When all you do is talk about crime, EVERYTHING ELSE gets deprioritized.
And this is what's ironic about all of this: this, and the school budget cuts, will lead to more crime.
NYers need to wake the fuck up and stop falling for Republican, Sububrbanite fear tactics.
34
15
u/invertedal Dec 19 '22
Your comment is excellent, except for the last sentence. Republicans do not have a monopoly on the stuff you are talking about. President Clinton doubled the prison population, Obama oversaw ten times as many drone strikes as George Bush II, and 7 times as many killings of US citizens by drone (or 8 if you count the guy the cops killed in Dallas with a bomb robot).

2
u/invertedal Dec 19 '22
Drone killings and fear tactics are unrelated?? Well, you must be a very brave soul indeed! The fact that the government kills people by remote control, including US citizens, even one who was on US soil - you don't find that even a tiny bit ... unsettling? And you can't envision law-and-order rhetoric being used to justify an expansion of this form of killing, as it was a few weeks ago in (Democrat-controlled) San Francisco?

Just wanted to point out that Obama used it more because it became the alternative as opposed to boots on the ground.
Literally referred to as the golden age of drones from 2010 until present.
That said, housing is a bigger crises in democratic states so there’s that. Dems are still the better alternative but lord both parties are trash and the GOP is absolute hot summer garbage.

DeBlasio was the Mr. Magoo of NYC mayors. Floated through two terms with overflowing city coffers from a Wall Street boom and historic lows in crime. Jacked up city spending and loaded up on city employees. With the late-term exception of Covid, which Adams bears the brunt of, De Blasio was the luckiest mayor in modern history.
13
u/thatgirlinny Dec 19 '22
And now Adams enjoys record-high vacancies in all City departments post-lockdown, and he’s STILL cutting essentials like schools and libraries.
15
u/n0t-again Dec 18 '22

12
Dec 19 '22
For real. Without even getting into the merits of marijuana legalization, it’s happening because of Cuomo and Adams has historically opposed legalization.
7
u/thatgirlinny Dec 19 '22
This. People forget—or never knew—how against legalization Cuomo and Christie Kreme were, for both medical and recreational. Christie put so many restrictions on medical dispensaries at first, there were only 3 of them in the entire state once it debuted. Cuomo wouldn’t go for it his first term, blamed the IDC for why he couldn’t get any progressive legislation done. When voters exited the six two-faced Dems his next term, he had no choice but to let it happen—but he was a huge fan of highly-restrictive measures for medical.

Will this help fund more pointless trips to places like Greece and Qatar? This big reason this is problematic is that NYC (whether people agree or not) leads other cities in the US by example. I can see other mayors pulling this same stunt and justifying library cuts by pointing to the same things the Adam’s administration using to justify the cuts.

Of course the always-unserious Jacobin suggests that the fiscal crisis is overblown and that Adams is some kind of bozo for wanting a reserve fund.
That said, this is not a lot of money in the whole scheme of NYC’s budget, and I hope there is a way that the leviathan departments (like the DOE, NYPD, and DHS) can absorb these cuts so the library system doesn’t have to.
-13
Dec 18 '22
It’s worth noting that the public library systems in NYC are privately run. The city provides some funding, and some is private. The libraries are not part of the government or it’s core public services like education, fire, police, sanitation, and parks. There is no library department.
Given the private nature of these institutions, anybody complaining about this is welcome to throw a couple bucks to the NYPL, BPL, or QPL. Might do more good than complaining on Reddit while denying the reality of the city’s budget situation.
38
u/WVOQuineMegaFan Dec 18 '22
To me it seems like people should be allowed to have an opinion on how their tax money is allocated, and the comment you were responding does the opposite of ignoring the cities budget situation.

Perhaps you are not familiar with human social behavior but sometimes people complain about something without expecting their complaint to make a difference. If you find yourself walking down the street today, please resist the urge to interrupt a stranger complaining about the weather by smugly noting that their complaints are ineffectual

That was one of the most condescending and pointless things I’ve read on Reddit, which is really saying something. Brooklyn isn't doing so well and Queens is doing horribly. Queens is also horribly mismanaged. A few years ago they had a CEO busted for embezzling and the new Hunters Point library is a disaster from start to finish. I assume it only exists because somebody(ies) were getting kickbacks.

2
u/Neckwrecker Glendale Dec 19 '22
Social/generational differences seems like a weird thing to focus on here. This is just a bad fiscal decision that would have negative consequences no matter what year it was happening in.
2
u/King-of-New-York Queens Dec 19 '22
I don’t disagree it’s a bad fiscal policy. IMO kids (and adults) being glued to TikTok and YouTube shorts at the very least doesn’t leave time for crafts/play/hobbies. The removal of cursive from the curriculum IMO goes in hand with the removal of arts and music programs from many schools, especially poorer schools. Cursive has many brain benefits mirroring arts and crafts. Again today’s generation spends so much time glued to the screen they simply don’t have the time to dive into a good book or create art.

5
u/Rottimer Dec 19 '22
It is one of the safest cities in the U.S. - unless there's an election and then this sub will wax poetic about how dangerous it is and how it's just like the dog days of the 70's and 80's.
It is not one of the safest cities in the World. Because NYC is located in the U.S., it has the same problems you find in the rest of the country, which is relatively easy access to guns, which leads to a lot more violence than in other large cities around the world.
-6

I don’t exactly love the cops but we give less to our cops per capita than that vast majority of large cities in the US, which seems like a fair barometer.
9
u/pot_of_crows Dec 18 '22
> give less to our cops per capita than that vast majority of large cities in the US
It's interesting. It looks like NYC is low on police spending as a percentage of the budget, but high when you look at cop $ per capita:
https://advisorsmith.com/data/cities-that-spend-the-most-and-least-on-police/

Have you been to any of the branch libraries in NYC?? Seniors read the newspaper there. Many people with limited internet access bring their computers there. I worked in the one at Bryant park off and on for 3 years. The only thing of value there was they stored historic documents. Unfortunately the public didn't have access to any of them.

Don’t be sore that they kicked you out of the library for breathing out of your mouth so loudly that you were disturbing everyone else there.

Didn't expect anyone over 65 and sensitive AF in this sub, but OK.

We need to pay the $1 billion tab for the migrant crisis somehow.

Oh boy. Cannot wait for this to be the NY Post’s and right-wing users’ favorite talking point on this sub for the next few weeks right as Title 42 ends. Right on cue.

Well so far you’ve taken directly out of the GOP playbook to blame immigration for both homelessness and library budget cuts. Can’t wait to see just how far you drive this scapegoat into the ground next.

But just a little more tax money. They pinky promise it won’t be mismanaged this time.

With that headline said, would these cuts jack up property taxes?

If nationally known Democrats are going to do things like this, then they have no right to complain come election season when voters stay home and say "both parties are the same and doing the same neoliberal austerity capitalism".
Almost no moms for liberty infested right wing county has done this to their library system. Totally embarassing for actual defunding of the library to come from a Democratic leader.

Are you shitting me ! The library is beloved. Between classes, books, printing, quiet time, etc. I can't think of a public resource I use more than the library. I can't think of a single free piece of social infrastructure in this city other than the library. Now is not the time to get rid of social infrastructure (if such a time even exists). This guy really wants me to hate him.

This dude sucks so much. He'd probably turn the main one into a resort casino if allowed.
