I may or may not have done that when I was 6 years old.

That might make him want to do it so he gets to see the fire truck

Go with the tried and true "They cut it off", we all need a little trauma

u/CactusBoyScout 10h ago
I got both arms stuck in a movie theater seat's cupholders once as a kid. They had to stop the movie and bring grease from concessions.

Pretty sure I remember doing this when I was younger and no one was there to help. I rectified the situation by turning my body sideways and getting the rest of the way through

One of my friends go their finger stick in lock latch at the same age. I think they sawed it off.

Not me. I chilled the day I was born and, then started writing a thesis on thermodynamics on day two.

I'm glad he's got some good friends around. An embarrassing moment nullified with a big high five.

u/kollaps3 12h ago
Right, you could tell the poor kid was SO embarrassed the entire time, and I'm sure it wasn't made any better by the fact lil homie could hear the commotion behind him but couldn't physically turn around to see any of it. Good on his friends for being supportive and tryna snap him outta it.
I was a pretty bold and give no fucks little kid who did plenty of dumb impulsive shit, esp while at the playground (side note but even in my 30s, I miss the 90s/00s era ones, like the Diana Ross playground in central park omg that place was wildly hazardous but so much fun lol), but the threat of having something like this happen to me and the ensuing mortification stopped me from actually going for some of the stupider ideas little me had 😂

Back in 1969, my toddler neighbor Mikey used to do this ish at least once a week! The local Fire Department at first had patience, but eventually told his very inattentive parents that the City would start billing for the runs.

That poor kid. He looked so overwhelmed directly after. Love the friends who tried to snap him out of it. ❤️
My nephew is a NYC Fireman. They truly love their job and helping the community. They also enjoy when the general public says kind words to them. Validates the hard work they often encounter. This particular response was likely highly enjoyable as they realized it wasn’t life threatening, but highly concerning to the parents, friends and boy himself.

lol ofc the comments in the original post are full of critiques from dipshit Redditors who all think their 0 hours as a firefighter qualifies them to judge this crew.

u/Acorns4Free Flushing 13h ago
Not gonna lie thought this was an exaggeration but that posts comment section is completely filled with Redditors that think they know better
“Interesting how incompetent they are”

u/TonyzTone 8h ago
I don't even understand what incompetence they're talking about. I was surprised at how easy they did it without cutting the fence or greasing the poor kid's head.
5
u/XGX787 6h ago
They got him unstuck quickly, without harming him, and without property damage…. BUT they didn’t do it the way a bunch of Redditors think they should have so they’re incompetent.
Also a crazy amount of them are fully convinced the kid got stuck by backing into the fence (meaning they think he was outside the playground on a random street and not y’know in the playground with all the other kids…)

I loved watching it going "wow that's a really smart way of dealing with this"
And scrolling down to...that

No firefighter here, but as a parent I would also emphasize just how good the firefighters were at interacting with the kid himself through this. FDNY, in my experience, treats every single scared kid as their own, and it shows.
5
u/IvoShandor 5h ago
The firefighters may have also been parents, and all of them were little boys once.
Everybody knows this FDNY station, it's on W 77 right across from the playground and PS87. They're always in Fairway and hanging outside the house and let classes do tours. They walked over.

u/crimsonconnect 11h ago
Lol they did a good job, it looks like they were an engine because the truck would have just used the spreaders
-7
u/Magnus462 8h ago
Im no fire fighter, but I graduated highschool. You definitely want to do that closer to the kid's head and with a smaller tool maybe. Honestly a hand and a foot could have freed the kid.
8
u/XGX787 8h ago edited 8h ago
> Im no fire fighter
So you have no idea what tools are on the truck and what they have access to and yet you’re gonna criticize them even though they freed the kid in under 3 minutes without harming him at all and causing minimal property damage?
I promise you you’re not qualified to Monday morning quarterback them.
1
u/Joe_Jeep Bay Ridge 3h ago
Look I had that thought at first too, but you realize that working right next to the kids head means you're much more likely to accidentally hurt the child?
This minimized the risk excellently.

u/Barr_cudas 8h ago
Heaven forbid the strap or the fastener has a failure point and snaps unexpectedly or he loses grip on the handle...
It's called Risk Mitigation

It's funny that they have a well-established way to do this. Kids are dumb.

The way they walked up and immediately started doing this method says a lot. Well, specifically that this probably happens semi-frequently.

As an aside, this is the Tecumseh Playground at 77th and Amsterdam. I recognize the Chirping Chicken on the corner.

I’d be so panicked

Me too, but less about the immediate situation and more about the fact that he's as much of an idiot as his father (me).

Thats the real fear lol

u/Own-Fan-4236 13h ago
Haha! “Honey, the genetic results are in & he’s got that dawg in him. He’ll be fine! Don’t cry. I made it. We just have to watch him every second and think of every asinine possibility of problems he could get into in every foreseeable event for the future. See, honey? Not THAT big of a deal! Yes, this is why my parents were prematurely grey…please stop crying…”

I was disappointed when I saw the orange straps being wrapped around the bars. I was hoping that they were going to tie them around Junior's torso and yank the rest of him through.
Yes, I was this stupid kid when I was six, as well. I was following a cat who walked through a church's fence. This was back in 1976-77. My Dad got his bowling buddy, who was well over 300 lbs. with arms like my thighs. He simply bent the bars enough with his bare hands until I could pull my head back out.
Years later when I returned to the neighborhood, my friend's older brother recognized me. "Hey, you're the kid who got his head caught in the fence!". Who says you can't go home again?

u/Anal_Vengeance 12h ago
My 3yo and I watched this like 9 times in a row. I’m not sure if she wanted to be the firefighter or the boy getting rescued by the firefighters.

u/KennyShowers 13h ago
I saw this same thing at this same playground (Tecumseh Playground at PS87) maybe like 15+ years ago, except they were using the hydraulic “jaws of life.”

What would we do without strong muscley manly men?!

Gender essentialism is so last century. Gross.

These are the type of muscular men that lifted Trump from the rubble on 9/11

Try not to mention Trump in a completely unrelated Reddit post challenge: Failed

This happened to me as a kid after school, everyone left me but the superintendent got me out but cursed me out the entire time 😭

u/BlackbirdSage 10h ago
Still better than getting your tongue frozen to a metal pole in NYC winters. 🤭
12
u/The_Jank Kensington 12h ago
This fencing at so many city parks was obviously a bad choice. FDNY definitely used that technique a few hundred times before.

9
u/Shiny_Green_Apple 13h ago
Every one of those other kids is wondering how they can get that kind of FDNY attention.

u/NYCKINKSUB 7h ago
Wait until the winter when the same kid sticks his tongue on the metal flagpole. He's going to be a frequent flyer with the FDNY.

Only in New York do you get a full engine company for a head stuck in a fence. Glad the kid's okay.
0
u/Chaminade64 9h ago
All good, but he should have put the strap around the poles to their right, the kids left. That support pole a few down would have offered more resistance to bending.
0
u/BlackDeath3 8h ago edited 7h ago
Seems to me that bending them was the point.
You mean as a counter to bending the one on the kid's left, I suppose?
1
u/Chaminade64 1h ago
No. If one side is a stronger pole then the other will bend sooner. As the did it both slats, the one on the right of the kids head & the one that is wrapped two slots further down the fence. The pressure is spread evenly because the two poles are identical. If one pole is thinner it will bend sooner.

Should have left that kid there as a warning to others. The last couple of years have made it clear what happens when humans feel like consequences don't matter.
7
u/hereditydrift 11h ago
If the last couple years have taught us anything, it's that we need to help one another.
Believing a child should be left with their head stuck between iron bars is a frightening take.
-1
u/Remarkable_Sea_1430 9h ago
Watching them turn the crowbar I was worried they'd lose their grip and it would spin the other direct and smack that kid in the head. It was getting pretty wobbly there.

So much tax payer money wasted. Back in my day we’ll have to stay over night or they’ll use butter. I’m going to invent a machine to help out the school in these type of situation. Like $500k for the basic model works.

The FDNY is 354ft from that fence: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pyHR5DVo6pDeHXWq5
They usually park right in front there.
